Been in tech since 1994. Microsoft is what it is today because It was NOT broken up after the 2001 Anti trust trial. It was allowed to continue along as an upgrade cash machine, in a somewhat bumbling fashion under salesman Ballmer, until they got (another) engineer with vision in charge. They also had no compunctions about consumer products because they were just getting serious about the Enterprise market with Windows NT and Exchange Server.
And now they are undeniably one of the big Cloud players with a built in defacto migration and upgrade path for the zillions of businesses using Windows, et al. Now we know who wins the centralized vs. decentralized argument. We are right back where we started from, a bunch of terminals connected to the mainframe, and sysadmin is the all powerful ruler.
