Count the number of employees under a manager. if it is less than [arbitrary number here] then a reorg is not only possible it is extremely likely. The exact number probably changes daily. I would peg it greater than or equal to 11 today. If you are a T5 manager in aero then you should be looking for individual contributor work now. Find programs that look fun and hide.

have to agree with RGW .~20 years ago some shop cell managers had close to 20 people on day shift and close to that on night shift and had to write reviews for the bunch. Pretty silly as the Manager had very limited interaction with the night shift people. Plus writing some 30+ reviews is a cluster you know what by it's self.
I heard of a target of 20, might be a challenge for some smaller departments. Long as the employees are more empowered to make decisions I don’t see that as a bad thing.
IMHO everyday Honeywell is trying to push it down. There is less and less face time with any managers as they seem to be trying to step away from the action let the workers do the work AND maker the decisions. On paper a manager may have 15 reports but you may only interface with the person when a review is required. Managers avoid decisions, avoid issue, just demand charts and numbers, purge the low 10%, try to come with reasons to get expensive workers ou and try to avoid anything bad sticking. Quick to blame others.
It'll be interesting to see if the current crop of dilettantes who occupy management posts are willing to deal with the paperwork (well, today's equivalent) associated with 11 - 20 direct reports. I lived through one of these things 15 or 20 years ago, when 360 degree reviews were in vogue, and the amount of BS involved had to be seen to be believed, and that's back when the objective was to develop people, not get rid of the.

Interesting. While I have been retired for 5 + years I recall at times some VP's having 2 or less reports and sometimes VP's having none. Common when a band 5 get's reassigned or his/her direct reports get axed.
