Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Is there any room for older employees at Verizon

I don’t consider myself as technically outdated. My job is till pretty needed, and I like to think that I contribute a great deal, at least within my department. However, it seems that that doesn’t matter.I’m too young to consider early retirement and old enough to be considered an older worker. Did the company really make it their regular practice to part with the long-timers?

Older employees are used for their knowledge and abilities to maintain the day to day status quo in our business while management & HR plot to eliminate you as they choose the younger employee to replace you.

Verizon IT pushes older leadership out. Once you hit a certain age you are put in dead end roles and made miserable until you leave (esp at Mgr/Director level).

Yes youth is always the future. I spent two years training young MBA’s. They never got it and I did their jobs too. They left the company. After leaving I spoke to one of them. She said our Management was incompetent and she was expected to work too hard. Twilight Zone.

All I can say is look for jobs in your area of expertise before you do anything. I took the package and I'm having a rude awakening. I'm in my 50s and see I was in a "silo" and wasn't not working on technologies needed now (SDN, Cloud, F5 load balancers, scripting/programming, Nexus switches). Having a tough time even getting an interview. So, take your time and make sure you can find a job outside of Verizon first.

You could have stopped at Millennials don't want to work.

Millennials don't want to work for 9 layers of incompetent bureaucrats in Basking Ridge. Verizon is essentially like working for the Department of Motor Vehicles... without the job security

The northeast has better weather than any Midwest state, no SJWs like California, no immigration problem like the southwest, and less p----hiles and serial k--lers than Florida. I'll stay where we have 4 seasons, ty very much.

Except millenilas don't want to work for a tired old telco whos HQ is in the armpit of the northeast. Bad weather and high taxes? Throw in the old disconnected leadership that changes their minds from one day to the next while screaming "its the network" ad nauseam to a consumer, and world who does not care. Yeah, hard pass.

I'll work in the bathroom, it is clean and more accommodating than some of our open offices.

It's crystal clear that Verizon would prefer all tenured older employees off payroll. Out with the old in with the new. For all millinials reading this, I hope you take note. My suggestion is to stay a few years then move on.

Do any of you union people understand that in Verizon And Verizon Business the offered a VSP? Three weeks for every year of employment. This has nothing to do with the EISP or whatever they call the union plan. The union got their contract and I am very happy for them and hope they continue to receive the benefits they fought for. Now for the non union there is no protection and outsourcing and automation is a reality they must face. I will say this, I appreciated my time in union and as management. Each person regardless of craft or management that gets up each day and goes to work deserves the respect and compensation for what they do.

I might be crazy but the older people do more and better work than the young people, why would VZ want to get rid of them?

VS is focused on youth. Ageism is running wild at VZ. They want to download and transfer your knowledge to younger employees, then lay you off. They want to automate your function, through an outsourced IT entity. Look for a new opportunity while you are employed, and ride out the challenges of VZ. Older employees that were rif'd or vsp are not working, some may not work again. The hatred of older employees by younger staff is frightening, VZ promotes this hostile and toxic workplace.
