Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

There are other options available

Honest question - why are people who are complaining about their jobs at BNYM not improving themselves and looking for new jobs? Why aren't you learning new skills? Things that will make you more attractive to potential employers?

I know most of you are overworked, but an hour a day on mastering a new skill after work can mean a world of difference down the line for you.

Try it. There is really no downside to learning something new.

It’s easier said than done in this economy. It takes time to find another job.

How do you know they’re not doing both? I can walk and chew gum at the same time. I can complain about the state of a once great company and management while job hunting. I can’t, however, just quit.

@3ado I have been here for about 25 years, I am almost 60 now. It's very hard at this age to change things - we'll see how things pan out, still employed. I wish all the best to all of you who may be affected.

Because I’m 57 years old and have worked here for most of my career. It’s not so simple to just walk away and try something new when I have to pay a mortgage and college tuition.

I jumped off the sinking ship a few months ago. All I can say is, I had to leave the financial field completely. I am so much happier now. I am a lot less stressed out and my quality of life has completely changed for the better. However , My years at BNYM helped me gain many transferable skills that were really crucial in helping me land my current new role. To those of you who are still at BNYM, hang in there, go in every day and do your best. Hang in there and good luck to everyone!

Yes and for PMs: you can bank 20 PDUs in advance.

Everyone can take advantage of BKU free courses and forums, even if you cannot charge all that to training, you can take the courses anyway.

I think you might even find some resume advice... :-)
