Leaving the UP... best decision I have made

I was a fairly high ranking, director level, employee. I walked away for another opportunity and couldn’t be happier. There is life at the end of the tunnel. Compensation and retention stock wasn't worth the damage I was doing to myself and my family. There are companies out there that will make competitive offers with a much better quality of life. I decided to be the owner of my career path and not put up with the constant threats of being let go.

I left as soon as I realized what UP meant by the term "operations management."

In most large companies "operations management" means managing and optimizing processes and systems to deliver a better service or product. There's obviously more to it, but that's the basic premise.

At UP "operations management" seemed to mean writing people up, covering agreement positions that are short-handed under the guise of training, sitting on pointless conference calls and listening to someone called "director" or "superintendent" bloviate, and driving for hours to the middle of nowhere to babysit adult men.

In addition, the salary (relative to the hours worked, travel, and responsibilities) was below average for the private sector.

On top of that, most of the skills learned aren't even transferable outside of the industry, or even outside of the company (put "cleared form B's" or "called for track & time" on your resume and see how many calls you get back).

UP is a joke.

the funny thing is lower level managers are leaving for jobs that a lot of these VPs couldn’t get because they don’t have the qualifications.

Director is not fairly high level when there are 5 layers of VP’s above you. 🤣🤣🤣

I’m a ninth generation railroader and my family used to get lowered down in a basket with some dynamite to build this railroad. I love this company.

I too was a high ranking employee for U.P and was let go about 6 months ago. I can tell you this, that place is a joke. I cant believe i ate into the b---s--- they were feeding me, what was i thinking. Im actually embarrassed about the way i behaved and how i thought i was hot sh-- posting up in my UP polo. I can tell you one thing for certain, that place is full of douchebags who act like they got money.

I encourage anyone who still has any dignity left to look elsewhere for employment and dont get s---ed into the UP cult.

@Original Poster:

If you were indeed a "fairly high ranking, director level, employee" wouldn't that make you at least partially responsible for some of what is wrong with UPRR?

Do you think you ought to own that before coming on a forum like this to share your inspirational anecdotes?

I wish BNSF to get trackage rights and move my automobiles here in Oxnard.

They would do a better job.

The biggest lie UP upper management tells their subordinates is that they will never find another job like the one they have. Which can mean one of two things. Either UP is the greatest job that ever existed....... O.K I’m back with you I had to pick myself off the ground from laughing. Or the second option is UP hires people that nobody else wants and so they should just be thankful to have a job. Which doesn’t reflect good on UP either if that’s what they are implying.

Good luck to everyone looking.

I’m leaving soon for a new opportunity. I am apprehensive and like to hear of others that have left and are doing well. Congrats to you and thanks for the positive information related to your new career path.
