Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

The sad reality of mid level managers

So, if you are a MTM or an OAPM (literally the two worst jobs in stores at Macy's), then you are supposedly an executive employee and such exempt from over time for hours worked in excess of 40 each week. For MTM's, we usually work anywhere from 50 to 60 hours a week. For OAPM's, you have to include all work done at both home and in the store, we also average 50 to 60 hours a week.

While these jobs have "manager, in their titles " most duties don't meet the FLSA's requirements for an executive employee, which will entitled people who sign up for the class action suit to overtime pay and back overtime owed by the company. If you are a MTM or OAPM, ask yourself the following questions:

Does your job mostly consist of managing the company or a department or do you spend the majority of your time doing physical labor? MTM's spend the majority of their time working truck and not supervising others.

Do you supervise at least two full-time employees? Many OAPM's don't meet this requirement and technically are on call 24 hours day and most put in 50 to 60 hours a week trying to do what used to be the job of two supposed executives. Doing alarm testing, working in fulfillment, working in AP rooms, helping to unload trucks, placing goods on the sales floor, cabling merchandise, doing audits, working reverse logistics, and all of the other physical work is not supposed to be the majority of what you do each day.

If you have answered "no" to just one of these questions, your employer is supposed to pay you overtime for hours worked in excess of 40 each week. As the company continues to trim hours, cut jobs, and push everyone to do more with less, the expectation for these mid level "managers" to work crazy hours and do all of the physical work by store managers is becoming more and more frequent in our stores.

The original poster, @YZaLVAa-5mtb gave a truthful observation of the reality of the work at these positions. Felt this post deserves a thread of its own.

Macy’s 2019 is doing more with less. Face it

We will be the next sears. I thought I got the short end of the stick when I was laid off 3 years ago. It was a blessing in disguise. I am now doing well out of retail. Feel bad for my co workers but you guys gotta get out of retail.

@Z8Ym4gB-evvg wow that must be really nice for them. I wish I could do that and supervise a team of about five people on the floor with a workload for twenty without getting up off my a-- to help them.

So true @Z8Ym4gB-dbag. As a regional executive, I observed the disparity between so many MTMs or even OAPMs in different stores. Those who complain of working long hours, working the trucks, etc., in clothing similar to the merchandising, signers or receiving associates are the MTMs or OAPMs who did not have strong managerial skills and had to work alongside their staff to complete the daily task. The good MTMs/OAPMs show up to work nicely dressed looking like executives, stayed on the floor in the morning to delegate and in the office for paperwork & meetings in the afternoon. To top it all, they left at 3 PM or 4 PM after 8 hours of work and meetings.

Ummm, not sure why the MTM is working the truck in your store. Ours doesn’t. That’s the job of the RTM, who is non exempt and is overtime eligible as they should be. Our MTM is exempt and rightly so, based on the job they do and the people they manage. They oversee pricing, markdowns, signing, and merchandising. Receivers handle the trucks and the others handle the placing and pricing and signing.

Former SM here, a 40 hour week just didnt exist when I was there for the SMs or MTMs. District visit or regional visit? LOL on having ANY work life balance during the 2 weeks leading up to the glorified show and tell all the while upper management tells you everything that needs to be done but does little to help except why cant you get associates to work extra while not having any OT hours LOL

How long is it taking for NCR to respond? They took the place of Mtech. Sad but true.

Sounds like you are speaking from a single store OAPM? I’m assuming.

It is an extremely challenging role and you truly are on call for the store 24-7. This week we absorbed another role - Mtech. I have already been asked by store manager and leadership for help with POS issues, email issues, printer issues. Guess this falls under the operations piece of my job now?
