I'm here considering my financial security. I've never had unemployment before, but let's say I ride this Verizon thing out as far as it goes and I get the ax for no fault of my own of course, is unemployment pretty much guaranteed? I would not take any VSP package. I know voluntary separation would take any possibility away. I haven't even been with the company for 2 years.

I'm assuming you are referring to unemployment benefits. Rules vary from state to state. Some states will give you unemployment as soon as you are RIF'd. Some will delay benefits until your severance runs out, so if you are given ten weeks of pay for severance, you can't get benefits until ten weeks after you get RIF'd. You should check with your state employment agency to verify what process they follow. I found good stuff via Google.

No. If you leave because they are paying you money to volunteer to be unemployed, then that is your unemployment because you quit your job.
If you "volunteer to leave" you get nothing from unemployement.
If you are "involuntarily asked to leave" then you get paid unemployment.

Yes, but they will calculate the number of weeks the severance applies to, and subtract those weeks for you total benefits, and also delay the start of actual benefits to be paid.
Varies by state. In Illinois, if your are layed off, you get unemployment. Even if you are given severance pay.
