Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

No vision

Verizon has been trying to change their image to a technology company. Crazy Ideas that people new wouldn't work like GO90 . Look at AT&T who bought Direct TV and now have great APP for Smart TVs to stream TV called Direct Now. It cost $50 a month. Works great. Cut loose FIOS and other cable companies. VZ doesn't have the vision

@2sr .... see the bigger picture and think past the level of a 7th grader. Of course the poles won't move but, moving the execs and staff to a business friendly State takes the political and Union pressure away from the company.

Verizon is playing the waiting game and once the Union work force is dwindled down to unprotected membership then you will see the company take steps and make moves that will irritate a great many. If the company does manage to move to transport and wireless only they will all but abandon NYC short of legally mandated requirements.

Think 2023 and factor in the highly reduced work force. Think many future technical jobs in the company will be salaried.

There are a lot of those services around, I think vz is going to start reselling YouTube tv, but they're not really that much cheaper than cable because you need a decent Internet service too. I got DirecTV now when it started for$35 a month. Service s---ed. Now that it's gotten better they're upping it to $55. I'll be looking for a triple play deal soon.

It's kinda tough @2ymw to transport landline facilities (poles, manholes, fiber) to a right-to-work state.

Somehow T-Mobile, Att and VZ all launched mobile enabled tiles nearly at the same time and they say Apple is planning on it too.

Leading the pack of spy devices. I mean purse finders.

It's not about liking AT&T. The Direct Now App is $50 a month. Streams nicely and had 99% channels. Easy to find what you want extra. Cut FIOS and Cable and save huge $$$.

Just saying VZ develop something like it. 5 G who is going to care.

Pro union folks please get over yourselves; you are a sensitive lot for certain. Regardless of the outcome of Verizon one thing is for certain and that is in a few years virtually all protected members will be off the payroll.

Not that I believe Verizon would do so, but any company can force itself into bankruptcy and reorg in a different State (company friendly), different owners/leadership or even be merged into a company in a right to work State and move all jobs to that State with those jobs be salaried.

Three years after the protected members are gone this will be a truly different looking company.

OP thinks the grass is greener at AT&T. What a tool. Just look at their layoff board.

Don't forget to take your union mandated breaks while doing nothing.

I remember Verizon ripping people off when most of you sales people were still in diapers. Companies like Revol Wireless, Net10, Tmobile, MetroPCS(Tmobil contract company), etc were keeping the prices reasonable while Verizon, Att, Sprint and the gang were charging by the minute.

I remember my buddy had his phone go bad, mailed it in for replacement under the sorry arzz warranty and had to wait 2 weeks (still got billed for service though). When the phone arrived, it was a refurbished phone and it was also bad. He had to wait another 2 weeks for another replacement.

Let me tell you sonney...I wouldn't buy Verizon service for $1 per month for unlimited everything. The main reason is because they screwed everyone dumb enough to purchase their plans and the true heros are the above mentioned Net10, Revol, etc.

I wouldn't get Verizon even if not only free for everything, but if they actually gave me $5 per month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only mo--ns sign up for Verizon. Get Tmobile stuff, like Metro PCS.

The current leadership has shown no hostility towards the union. Why start now?

@jtw wrote "In the end they failed to operate as a blue chip, long term investment company and instead attempted to operate as an entrepreneurial upstart... with individuals that were not capable of the job... [they have] survived simply because of [their] size...But that advantage is quickly fading away...The company essentially wants to operate as a carrier and nothing more. But there is where the competition is also."

That would all indicate the traditional workforce has a place here rather than upsetting the apple cart, reinventing the wheel, whatever. Bringing in a bunch of low-paid contractors would be to the detriment of advancing jtw's agenda to get things back on track. But he's got a bias blindspot that stops him from that realization.

Verizon doesn't care about people who "spent their entire adult life" working for it. It doesn't care about the union or if it is immoral. Only the stock price matters. Climbing on poles and in holes may be done by contractors. Its true, its modern day business. It is what it is.

"...The next logical process for the company is to force itself into a bankruptcy thereby shedding the pension, Union, most debt and more properties..." -- @jtw

You really think it's the union's fault that we are currently where we find ourselves? A fake bankruptcy simply to void agreed upon contracts, and undermine individuals that have already given their entire adult working life, would be both transparent and immoral. Why should they suffer for doing their jobs? Just because YOU deem them an easy, dispensable target that you view as peons below your lofty status? Fix the actual causes. People are not going to work for nothing toiling on poles and in manholes.

Everyone who thinks Hans is failing take a look at the $60 stock price and think about why he was really hired

@ZAUhDM4-nve I think the problem is deeper than that. All the important decisions were taken by the above said Americans including Marni and Lowell.

The problem is that it is an American company being run by non-Americans who do not understand the American people or market. It really is that simple. And now they want to start pushing social justice warrior nonsense instead of focusing on delivering good products and services and making money. Stealing defeat from the jaws of victory. People want to be able to communicate at a fair price with little hassle. That simple.

This is what happens when you do not have a certified CEO running the company instead of an engineer. It did not help that the BOD did not have the insight to see how badly this would fail. Of course, the BOD may have wanted this simply for what has happened to the stock dividend.

In the end, the company failed to operate as a blue chip, long term investment company and instead attempted to operate as an entrepreneurial upstart. At the same time they were busy breaking the glass ceiling with individuals that were not capable of the job.

Verizon has survived simply because of its size. But that advantage is quickly fading away and IoT (yet to be secure) and 5G will hamper the company substantially due to cost outlays.

The next logical process for the company is to force itself into a bankruptcy thereby shedding the pension, Union, most debt and more properties. Reorg under a new name and no debt or possibly be assumed by a venture capital firm that will take on the company debt. I would not necessarily count on the Verizon brand name being there for eternity.

The company essentially wants to operate as a carrier and nothing more. But there is where the competition is also.
