Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Is Macy's better or worse than other retailers?

I'm not asking about sales or customer experience - I'm asking about employees? How is working there compared to other retailers?

I was thinking of applying, just to leave my current job which is horrendous - but after reading some of the posts here... Is it really that bad?

If you are looking for an hourly colleagues level position, you should probably look elsewhere. Macy's pays at the lower end of the retail range and asks more from regular hourly employees than any other retailer out there today. You can get a job here making less than you do at a fast food place and you will be expected to ring customers, sell customers the Macy's credit card, clean out fitting rooms, replace merchandise left behind by customers, try to sign people up for the Macy's MyClient program, try to sell the charity program of the day, pick merchandise for fulfillment orders, pick merchandise for Buy Online and Pickup in Store orders, and recover and maintain your sales floor, and recent we are now being asked to do markdowns as well.

You might look at this list and thing, yeah, so what it's a job. The problem is that Macy's has cut so many people and hours that the expectations to do the aforementioned list of tasks is completely unreasonable. You get coached on all of the expectations and yelled at by the managers and district vice president during visits, even though they know that it is impossible to get everything done with the limited staffing we have in our store.

As other posters have mentioned, you can make more money working at other retailers and restaurants and you are appreciated if you just show-up on time, work steady and reliably, and keep a good attitude. The unreasonable workload and expectations at Macy's should make it one of the last places you should look for employment unless you have no other options.

Ive worked for several. Where this is good here may be worse or better somewhere else. etc.. Some locations of every retailer have stores with a good culture and some with bad. All retailers have their share of gossip and high school like drama.

All retailers are trying to cut costs in some way and are tossing everything at the eall to figure out a new direction.

In the end all retailers will have too many stores and will have to close stores. Not just because of the internet. We simply dont shop as we used too.

Macys specify purchased allot of ailing May Company stores, never invested in them or closed redundant locations in larger markets and never closed or relocated stores as cities grew and new development made the former locations obsolete. This took decades.

I have gone to may dark, run down snd dated locations (think 1980 salmon color tile & laminate marble pink Jewelry bays) With a very limited selection of everything and curtains walling off large portions of the store.

Location, location, location. I have been here 20+ years. Seen many changes. Gone through many tough changes and stuck it out. I work with fabulous people. We all work hard. We help each other through thick and thin. I sometimes can’t believe some of the stories I hear on this feed. It is definitely not a perfect world. The thing about retail is it is always changing. You either adapt or die. No matter what field you are in, if you cannot change with the job, leave, the door is always open.

If you have never been in retail before, you will have a better mindset going in. If you are strongwilled, thinks positive, and hard worker, you will be in great shape. However, you will be working with long term associates who have gone through so many changes & challenges, e.g., managers, policies, additional functions, opening credits, sales per hour, etc. Make sure to ask questions during interviews, there are good and bad in any line of work. I worked there for over 25 years and went thru all kinds of changes, but learned to adapt. You will too if you are a team player and will take the job long term and not just for the paycheck. You will hear a lot of negative whispers, but those did not affect my behavior, I had the job and thankful for it. I used to tell myself if I became negative in my workplace, "If I don't like it here anymore, I'm out."

depends on the job your interested in working.

You could probably make a decision if you visit the location before you apply. Just look around get a feel for it .

If it’s logistics you’ll probably be better off somewhere else .

A lot of the jobs are the same nowadays people hate their jobs or love them, & just stay out of convenience. Really do the research for benefits for a job would be my advice & research the culture/environment before hand.

Macy's has gotten worse, but it is still 100 times better than Dillards.
