Follow up to January 2022 "6 facts" comments. They're still messing with our jobs. With Vena, now the CEO, he's basically taken PSR to another level. In the Chicago Freight Terminal, we've had 2 employees get ki-led on the job in 2024. One at Proviso, the other in Kenohsa.

  1. A couple years ago they relaxed the attendance policy only to go back to punitive attendance policy practices.

  2. They offered us a stock option. 40% match up to 5% of your contribution. That's a good deal, UNTIL they "adjusted" their match down to 20%.

  3. The purchase of NS. We are told, everything will be fine, there's opportunities and there will be "Jobs for Life".

There's a lot of carrot dangling and empty promises. There's still downsizing, erosion of trust, burnout & manager turnover. Along with certain ESG factors being neglected.
Here in Chicago, we work hard. We are THE backbone here and UP doesn't treat us as such and they are doing everything they can to get rid of us in Chicago. We have certain protections in place that make this job more tolerable. We get paid a lot of money, some of us Yardmen/Brakemen/Conductors make $140,000 a year while Engineers can make well over $150,000 a year. When the protected CNW old heads are all gone, so is our grandfathered agreement. Hub and spoke. No more going home each day and more job abolishments.

My final word is, Union Pacific is not a good choice for work. Stay MILES away from it.

Was hired on as conductor in 08. Completed my initial 5 weeks classroom and then started on the job training. Right before finishing the 5 weeks training, the rumors started about how UP was going to fire all of us. Ended up furloughing the entire class. Job was a joke. Management sucked and very racially discriminatory. Don't even think about applying. UP - you suck.

I’ve been subjected to UP’s bullsh-t for 25 years. Lance Fritz is nothing more than company dismantler, GE was first now UP is his project. Everything he says about having an ample amount of employees to run trains, is a bald face lie. They can’t even crew the jobs in the yards and road. So, everyone on call, can go out of town and be subjected being held in the motel for up to 2 days so equates to a total of 4 days total. 1 out 2 motel &1 day home, on one trip. Ten hours later subjected to the same thing and called out upon rest expiring
4 days away, 10hours at home. He boasts about profits yet not willing to give the backbone of the company a fair & acceptable contract, it’s been 3 yrs w/o one. While he makes annual salary of 15 million & bonuses of 15 million for a total 30 million. The last 4 years have been a travesty because of PSR. Got rid of 15-20% of the workforce to try & obtain 50% operating costs. No matter what the ramifications would be to the company. Sold off property and stored thousands of locomotives. I’m done could go on for days. You do your own assessment, it’s all true. I hate them company since the 1st day of Fritz.

I'm a yardman at Proviso. In a railroad perspective, I've been lucky not to be furloughed or fired for some kangaroo court bulls%#t. (UP TE&Y employees know exactly what I mean.)

FACTS:

  1. Hump shut down, causing 20 plus job abolishments. (CRO's, hump conductors, trim jobs.)
  2. Transfer jobs rearranged and handed to the "road" divisions. (road guys got screwed too.)
  3. Regular assigned board jobs cut. (utility jobs, switchman jobs & engineer jobs.)
  4. Extraboard cut down to 20-30 from 50 slots.
  5. Safety and GCOR rules nerfed down or rescinded in order to "boost productivity". This caused higher injury rates including one death as a result. All in the Chicago area not including the rest of the UP system.
  6. G2 jobs cut from 3 switchers per shift down to 1 switching job resulting in 13 men being bumped and displaced.

There's more facts available but I'm not gonna post those figures. Too much to list.

In short.... this "PSR Unified Plan" has been a real s#%tshow.

Do not apply for a job at UP. Do not let them tempt you with the sign-on bonus which comes with MANY strings attached. Good Luck.

On Tuesday, UPRR announced to the media executives would take 25% cut in pay, May, June, July & August, it sounded like it effected only Executives, but it doesn't many employees whose salary for a entire year doesn't amount to what the Executives make in a month are affected. These same employees that actually move the freight, came to work everyday, putting their health & their family's health at risk. On Thursday UPRR announced 1st quarter revenue of $1,500,000,000. Any wonder why Union Pacific is the worst company in America (the World to work for), looks like they are trying to retain their title. Lance Fritz's 1 year of compenstation would pay for 200 employees @ $75,000 per year. If you work for or deal with Union Pacific, you understand the term "I've been Railroaded." The greed of the Board of Directors & Executives at Union Pacific is appalling & is all at the expense of hard working & loyal employees who actually move their freight, that make them billions of dollars every quarter.

Where you are now you cant even imagine what the bottom will look like. the 1% trickle down economics ceo's and unions bought and paid for by big business. We are all stuck in the belly of this horrible machine and it is bleeding to death. Fritz will make a truley amazing politician in the most horrific way. Which is status quo. My only hope is the rich apes never make it off this planet alive to spread the worst of us to colonize into or beyond our solar system. No different then Columbus and the like. Pray we are all doomed on this tiny rock never to spread this disease and hopefully this failed experiment ends. Humanity what a joke. That is what i have learned working here.

Husband was suspended from job after 19 years for something that has become a culture at Union Pacific including management. Management should focus on jobs that are claimed to be done and reported but are not putting lives in danger on he track. Some management have the guts to say skin color let you know where I stand.

  1. Union Pacific

Glassdoor rating: 2.4/5

Employees who would recommend working at company: 26%

Employees: 42,000

Industry: Transportation

Headquarters: Omaha, NE

Union Pacific, a railroad company that operates in 23 states in the western U.S., is the only transportation company to rank on this list. According to Glassdoor reviews, dissatisfaction often stems from a lack of work-life balance, long hours on call, and a rigid structure based on seniority. Union Pacific CEO Lance Fritz has held the top job for over four years and has a dismal 13% employee approval rating on Glassdoor.
