Layoffs at Oracle Ravello

Oracle acquired Ravello in 2016. The company provided a VMware to public cloud migration solution. They have been part of OCI since working on VM stuff and migration. About half the people (40-50) have been given notice.

Yeah, who in their right mind would migrate to OCI, omg!

They were working on the general migration problem for OCI not just VMware which is what they started with. This would suggest that oracle realizes that the game is over and there will be little to no migration to OCI.

Maybe the simple truth is that there are not many clients who want to migrate from VMware to OCI, thus the need for the tool is going away! Another sign of oracle’s decline?

The team was indeed working on a new migration tool from vmware to OCI. They were told that OCI has decided to refocus all RnD into Seattle, and that migration of customers is being achieved manually by SEs for now.

So please explain. Ravello has the experience and was doing the work. Is there a team in OCI better suited to do the migration work? I don’t think so.

Too bad, Ravello is a great product.

The point is that ravello worked on migration technologies to migrate customers to OCI from VMware as well as OCI-C. Laying them off means that oracle is giving up on migrating customers to OCI. Doesn’t bode well for the long term future of OCI.

That’s what oracle does with acquisitions, lays off their people

I guess this means that oracle is giving up on migrating customers to OCI.

They are located in Israel so the lay-off process requires a (pro forma) hearing and then 30 days notice.
