Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Job Hunting For UP Employees

I'm curious how others looking for new jobs have done out in the market. Did having UP in your resume help? How did you leverage skills learned while at UP? How long did it take to get an offer and start date? Should I give notice before I leave or just ghost them? People I know who quit have said it was harder then they thought to land a job.

If your on the mechanical side I think it’s a bit harder to find a job. Either a company doesn’t want you because they are scared that when called back you will go. Or they have had up employees before that left a bad taste in their mouth.

I would imagine it depends on the market for your skill set. About 40% of people who ask where I work don’t even know what Union Pacific is.

I'd say it was pretty easy. Was an IT intern and found a job in a couple of weeks in Omaha. UP is known for having a plethora of talent and the general consensus around town is that people trying to leave UP on their own accord are highly desired.

Also - I only browse this site anymore to see the place go downhill. I don't miss the place one bit.

Depends on where you live I assume. I was laid off, applied for a hand full of jobs a week and within a month to a month and a half I was getting comparable offers. People interviewing me knew about what UP is doing and used it as a selling point to work for them in a place where you are actually valued.

If I were you I’d walk into your bosses office and say good morning sir I have something to tell you. Turn around bend over and then fart as loud as you ever have in your life. Then walk out and never come back. They will figure out your intentions and you won’t waste any time on small talk. After all he’s a busy man and has a railroad to run.

It is never easy getting laid off . I was laid off in 82 along with a bunch of Railroaders.

It changed a bunch of lives. some ended in divorces . I was laid off for 8 years but came back on a recall and still retired with 30/60 . It is more difficult to get a job as a laid off Railroaders , they feel you will run back to the railroad as soon as they recall you.

Gone are the days of giving a professional notice at a place like UP. There is no more mutual respect. It Used to be to get escorted out of the building you had to have some bad stuff on your computer or something. Now they take people out like criminals who have been good workers.

As for how easy it will be to get a job no one can tell you that it. It’s easy for a lot of people especially if you’ll take a small pay cut with the understanding you’ll work less hours.
