Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Depressing work environment

Union pacific has completely destroyed employee morale with these never-ending layoffs. Tell me, how often do you see any of your coworkers in a good mood? When did you personally last smile or laugh at work?

The only conversations we have anymore are about layoffs or about bashing the incompetent management.

This can’t be healthy.

Depressing and stressful. Needlessly so.

A lot of people attribute UP's toxic work culture to the implementation of PSR across the system. While PSR has accelerated UP's characteristic toxicity to nearly psychotic levels, the company culture has been in a state of decline since Lance took over as President/Chairman/CEO. In an intensely bureaucratic hierarchy like UP, the person at the top has enormous influence on the company culture at large.

Lance (to his credit) understands the needs of investors well, and has made some tepid attempts at reforming the general culture (he took EEO complaints seriously). His problem is that he didn't understand (or respect) the railroad, and probably still doesn't. His major mistake was to attempt to apply lean principles that work well in other industries to the railroad directly. His choice of people to carry this out (fresh college graduates) was a poor one.

That's what I did. I waited until I got laid off though and already had something lined up. I made sure I didn't do sh-- the few weeks before I got furloughed as a machinist from west colton California. I literally came in, clocked in, didn't do sh-- and clocked out. Worked on my resume and got a better job without the bullsht. Get out now. I'll never go back to this sht company! 5 years and I or many others didn't matter. Our families don't matter. F*ck 'em, they also didn't matter.

Shop Directors are just following orders from OMAHA and being selfish as usual just protecting their 200k+ a year salary without any care in the world about their employees who supposedly they care so much about.

Shift managers HATE their jobs and are more than likely leaving soon or looking elsewhere for employment. They do as little as they can just to get by.

If this is sounds like your facility, hit the ^ button!

It’s not healthy. But you have to learn how to separate work and personal. Go to work, do your job, and go home. If you feel it’s too bad you should look for another job.
