Depressing and stressful. Needlessly so.
A lot of people attribute UP's toxic work culture to the implementation of PSR across the system. While PSR has accelerated UP's characteristic toxicity to nearly psychotic levels, the company culture has been in a state of decline since Lance took over as President/Chairman/CEO. In an intensely bureaucratic hierarchy like UP, the person at the top has enormous influence on the company culture at large.
Lance (to his credit) understands the needs of investors well, and has made some tepid attempts at reforming the general culture (he took EEO complaints seriously). His problem is that he didn't understand (or respect) the railroad, and probably still doesn't. His major mistake was to attempt to apply lean principles that work well in other industries to the railroad directly. His choice of people to carry this out (fresh college graduates) was a poor one.
