Dear Whole Foods Team members,

A year ago, a group of current and former WFM team members and I created an organized labor movement within Whole Foods that we named Whole Worker. We learned that not only had Amazon taken away all forms of profit sharing from store team members, but they had granted in secret full shares of Amazon stock to store team leaders and many associate store team leaders. We felt this was a betrayal of Whole Foods’ core values. We had just witnessed mass layoffs of many of our co-team members including the store graphic artists, and we had been made aware of future layoffs, euphemistically referred to as “restructuring”. We believed that the culture, values and spirit of Whole Foods was dying under Amazon, and we decided to try and do something about it.

We sent out a mass email to stores and launched a Whole Worker Slack community. We wanted to offer team members a way to come together and collectively use our voices to demand higher pay and to improve working conditions. We also collaborated with members of the national media to amplify our shared experiences.

Shortly after our mass email and media blitz, John Mackey confirmed what we exposed about profit sharing and announced a one-time-only stock grant for full time team members above 6,000 service hours. In the following weeks, Whole Worker leaked Amazon’s anti-union training materials (that had been made available to team leaders on Whole Foods’ own Cornerstone) to the media and the Bernie Sanders campaign. This helped pressure Jeff Bezos to implement the $15 minimum wage at Amazon and Whole Foods which happened a short time later. We built a coalition of store, regional, and global team members within Whole Foods and Amazon to give a voice to all workers. We continue to address ongoing issues within our stores today.

I think it is safe to say that most of us are unhappy that our primary job now is simply to push Amazon Prime. A year ago John Mackey, in the team member scoop on VideoFarm, described our relationship with Amazon as “a marriage where both partners will change over time”.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. A marriage is a partnership.

We are Amazon’s subordinates.

When John Mackey talks about our “conscious integration” with Amazon, what he really means is Whole Foods selling out. We may still have our core values and some measure of autonomy from Amazon, but it doesn’t take a genius to see there is no core value at Whole Foods today more important that hawking Amazon Prime to our customers. Literally everything in our business seems to come second to that. Are we really Whole Foods Market, or are we brand ambassadors for Amazon Prime?

Furthermore, inadequate labor budgets continue to go unaddressed. If you are an order writer today it is very likely you still make less than our order writers did at the time they were laid off back in 2015, even after taking into account the minimum wage increase. Since the wage increase, pay tiers have condensed, real profit sharing, gainsharing or bonuses have all been removed, and hours continue to be cut from our paychecks week in and out.

Even at our most difficult quarters back in 2013, 2014 and 2015, Whole Foods was never unprofitable. Today we are not unprofitable. Profitability was never the real issue. The issue was that our profits weren’t growing fast enough to satisfy our investors, and now our profits are not growing fast enough to satisfy Jeff Bezos. It is horrid what our company is willing to do to our hours and paychecks in the name of larger profits.

It is the team members who create all the profit and we not only deserve our share of it, we demand it! Without us, not a single item would be stocked or bagged.

Without us, there is no Whole Foods.

If you work in a Whole Foods store today and you feel that your team is constantly understaffed and you experience your hours being cut almost weekly, know that you are not alone. We have learned that this is the reality of virtually every store in the company.

The demands of our jobs always go up and the resources we are given to do our jobs always go down. And with the prospect of cashierless checkout, automated ordering and auto-replenishment coming in the next year, we can all expect future layoffs and restructuring with only the mere opportunity to reapply for a position at a much lower wage than before. We can expect this because it is precisely what Whole Foods has done time and time again.

Whole Worker’s mission is to improve working conditions, benefits and compensation for all Whole Foods team members. We believe the power dynamics within Whole Foods has to change, and we are using unorthodox means of collective action to accomplish this mission.

Most of us believe that the best way to accomplish our goals is to unionize all Whole Foods stores in North America, but unionizing is a long, complicated and often controversial process. What is not complicated nor controversial, however, is organizing. Organizing is simply coming together to challenge leadership with one voice. Whole Worker believes in unorthodox forms of labor organizing such as social media and mass media.

Whether or not to organize usually boils down to one question:

"Do you trust Whole Foods Global leadership?"

If so, great. If not, we invite you to get involved and help push back.

We want to make it easier for all team members to come together to express their concerns in a community that they can trust and confide in. From this, they can learn to help themselves and their fellow team members. We want team members to realize that they do have a voice, a very loud one, to make significant and important changes in this company. We want to give everyone the tools and the knowledge to stand up for what is right and good for Whole Foods Market, and we want to make that process as private and secure as possible to protect people from retaliation from leadership.

This is why we are launching a new Whole Worker public community today hosted on Telegram, an encrypted, private and non-for-profit messaging service that is used by hundreds of millions of people all around the world. We no longer use Slack simply because we couldn’t guarantee the safety of our members’ personal data. With Telegram this is not a problem.

Some of the things we are fighting for include:

Removing wage caps for long term team members

Removing the PT:FT ratio or re-working it to favor full-time work

Yearly raises that are independent of work performance

Lowering the eligibility requirements for insurance

Embracing the philosophy of added responsibility for added pay

Full-profit sharing for full-time team members

Dramatically increase staffing across the board

We hope that this will serve as the beginning of the creation of a tight-knit community that all team members are proud to be a part of, by reiterating all of our original core values. We wish to make a better and flourishing work environment for all present and future team members.

Whole Worker is not a formal labor union as of today. In the past we have collaborated with members of RWDSU, UFCW, IWW and DSA.

Whole Worker is an organization of Whole Foods employees that engages in labor organization and concerted activity on and off the job in the interest of improving team member working conditions.

My tl never closes and says we all need to close but why is my tl excempt from closing and his atl’s too?guess i should marry a stl to get excemptions and privileges especially not having almost no night crew after they leave in the morning.

You know what i do with the framed posters with leadership values ? Wipe my a-- with it couldn’t be further from the truth.

In my experience store leader ship always use other people names when they are told to hold someone accountable and they want us to use our names instead of theirs when they want someone fired they find a reason even when they do it sh-- my astl always comes in 15 min before opening and never comes down to the sales floor after her a-- touches the chair but she can point out whats wrong from the stl window but can’t see that 7 front end team members just congregate to bs on the sales floor even thats teams leadership. check your cameras at store opening go back a couple of days and really dig in to why your store looks like sh--.

Little does the stl know how much c-ap the astl’s talk about her behind her back to team members and the biggest is the shifty schedule always changes day to day and will tell team members are you suprised ? We have to look at the schedule everyday to see who is in charge to see which one of them is in charge since changes are rampant and astl’s will not do a closing shift since emergencies pop up daily so the patsy the non astl shifty will spend his day talking to the behind the counter teams and looking at sports events on their phones in the stl office or conference room when they should be watching the store and making sure standards are kept up.Here is a geat example we asked a astl about why safety issues are overlooked when reported and his response was I don’t know i’m not the point person ask her or maybe bring it up to the stl and see if she holds her accountable.

The stl is very affraid of holding her team accountable and always brings up others peoples names when talking to team members so yeah her authority is not present at all even the sss will not work the schedule asked by amazon for the change overs since he said no so there you have it at least she tried right?

my team has to break down and put on a cart 2 teams loads that are not even ours 2 team leaders ago with emails that it hasn’t happened in 2 1/5 years and store leadership wonders why my team can’t keep the floor full.When brought up the stl had another astl tell the lazy tl to respond in a email where he seemed clueless and oblivious to the fact that #1 it’s not my product ,i don’t get extra labor allocated to do that and yes poir desicion to have 1 team hold other teams hands when we fail to meet your expectations and this is the tip of the iceberg.Still you rather train team members to by pass and not get when using faulty epuipment ot tools.

it comes down to horrible micro managing by store leadership and a fear of accepting the truth that you really are not good enough to be where you are at and everyone assinged to you is the bottom of the barrel which means if they were put there to fail your store to get rid of the worst managed store.

You can really tell who hasn't worked at a union Grocery store by some of these replies. I did for 10 years and it s---ed. I watched employees put in less than half the work I did get the same raise and never be held accountable. Nope. I'm fine with the current set up that has us above industry in pay, and raises biased on merit.

Several team members were written up or fired at our store after they got hurt trying to get the huge work load done but they blame the team members since it’s self inflicted and it’s the same reason every time according to the store team leader whole foods had no hand in you getting hurt while doing the work of 2-3 team members while they molded their office chairs after their big butts already a whole worker supporter and recruiter off the clock and off company property but they still fire team members involved in it once the store team leader finds out since it creates a hostile work enviorment according to them .

Team members take all the blame when the leaders mess up .

God forbid someone has an idea and of course they jump on it like a b--ch in heat

but it is not ots or planogramed so regional shoots it down and we get in trouble for it.

Union now please.There is some serious harrassment at my location just to make it seem like the leaders do their job by holding team members accountable while they sabotage teams.

Unionizing with lead to:

Lower starting wages. Try minimum wage for everyone coming on board and good luck with retention and keeping them motivated. Best part let's classify some TM's as Service Members and legally pay them below minimum wage!

Raises based on time worked instead of performance. Been here long enough but you're lazy...congratulations anyway here's a raise!

Raise caps at 25/35c a year. 6-10% raise? Nope. Here's your 25 cents! Contracts that last 3-4 years and ALWAYS end up with threats of strikes.

Scheduling based on seniority which will k--ls the flexibility of our business. Good luck getting experienced TM's to work on weekends. Good bye to any and all service levels.

Unions simply do not provide the economic benefits that their supporters claim they provide. They are labor cartels, intentionally reducing the number of jobs to drive up wages for their members. In competitive markets, unions cannot cartelize labor and raise wages. Companies with higher labor costs go out of business.

Want your labor % to go from 15% to 7% than go work somewhere else, there's plenty of Unionized grocery stores out there. See you in 3 months when you're asking for your job back.

With all due respect, merit increases need to be based on job performance. Otherwise we end up looking like we already do. A lot of overpaid TMs who have been here for 20 years who will never get fired for not doing their job. They get an increase each year basically for being alive. This is a grocery store . Making close to 48 K ($23/hr) is a fair wage. Not sure what the idea is with health insurance but the the 60 day waiting period makes sense for hourly workers in the retail industry which has high turnover. Federal law does not require employers to offer health insurance to part time workers. And yes, I am in TMS.

Back in the day unions had a needed purpose. Now, all they do is charge workers to get their money. Unions now force companies to replace workers, down size, or close. I've been in unions. Unions make the management vs worker thing worse, not better. You're better off finding a company run by someone who actually cares. You are delusional if you think unions care about anything other than power and control. Don't be so gullible.

1-I respect your passion but the "john Mackey is BAD man" trope always seems so played out.

2-The demands of OTS continue to make customers a "nuisance", as they are a drag on one's time to accomplish tasks.

3-Amazon signage is tacky AF, as is the supposed integration of these 2 companies.

Unions don't do jack. Anyone who thinks they do need to learn more. Ever been in a union? Did it make your life better? My family has to move because union demands closed down the company. Unions are for political purposes only. Keep your dues, change companies, you'll be happier.

I get what you are doing. You are fighting for the same things I fought so hard for my team. I saw what was happening, the abuse of team members and daily contradiction of company policy. Team members couldn’t break the rules, but store leadership could walk all over them. The harassment, s-xual and otherwise that goes on is unconscionable. Whole Foods was sold. Whole Foods is gone. You have no control over anything now. The company belongs to someone else that doesn’t care about core values. This new company has no soul, no compassion, no interest in team member happiness. What can you possibly accomplish?
