Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

For anyone who didn't get the email...

Dear Whole Foods Team members,

A year ago, a group of current and former WFM team members and I created an organized labor movement within Whole Foods that we named Whole Worker. We learned that not only had Amazon taken away all forms of profit sharing from store team members, but they had granted in secret full shares of Amazon stock to store team leaders and many associate store team leaders. We felt this was a betrayal of Whole Foods’ core values. We had just witnessed mass layoffs of many of our co-team members including the store graphic artists, and we had been made aware of future layoffs, euphemistically referred to as “restructuring”. We believed that the culture, values and spirit of Whole Foods was dying under Amazon, and we decided to try and do something about it.

We sent out a mass email to stores and launched a Whole Worker Slack community. We wanted to offer team members a way to come together and collectively use our voices to demand higher pay and to improve working conditions. We also collaborated with members of the national media to amplify our shared experiences.

Shortly after our mass email and media blitz, John Mackey confirmed what we exposed about profit sharing and announced a one-time-only stock grant for full time team members above 6,000 service hours. In the following weeks, Whole Worker leaked Amazon’s anti-union training materials (that had been made available to team leaders on Whole Foods’ own Cornerstone) to the media and the Bernie Sanders campaign. This helped pressure Jeff Bezos to implement the $15 minimum wage at Amazon and Whole Foods which happened a short time later. We built a coalition of store, regional, and global team members within Whole Foods and Amazon to give a voice to all workers. We continue to address ongoing issues within our stores today.

I think it is safe to say that most of us are unhappy that our primary job now is simply to push Amazon Prime. A year ago John Mackey, in the team member scoop on VideoFarm, described our relationship with Amazon as “a marriage where both partners will change over time”.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. A marriage is a partnership.

We are Amazon’s subordinates.

When John Mackey talks about our “conscious integration” with Amazon, what he really means is Whole Foods selling out. We may still have our core values and some measure of autonomy from Amazon, but it doesn’t take a genius to see there is no core value at Whole Foods today more important that hawking Amazon Prime to our customers. Literally everything in our business seems to come second to that. Are we really Whole Foods Market, or are we brand ambassadors for Amazon Prime?

Furthermore, inadequate labor budgets continue to go unaddressed. If you are an order writer today it is very likely you still make less than our order writers did at the time they were laid off back in 2015, even after taking into account the minimum wage increase. Since the wage increase, pay tiers have condensed, real profit sharing, gainsharing or bonuses have all been removed, and hours continue to be cut from our paychecks week in and out.

Even at our most difficult quarters back in 2013, 2014 and 2015, Whole Foods was never unprofitable. Today we are not unprofitable. Profitability was never the real issue. The issue was that our profits weren’t growing fast enough to satisfy our investors, and now our profits are not growing fast enough to satisfy Jeff Bezos. It is horrid what our company is willing to do to our hours and paychecks in the name of larger profits.

It is the team members who create all the profit and we not only deserve our share of it, we demand it! Without us, not a single item would be stocked or bagged.

Without us, there is no Whole Foods.

If you work in a Whole Foods store today and you feel that your team is constantly understaffed and you experience your hours being cut almost weekly, know that you are not alone. We have learned that this is the reality of virtually every store in the company.

The demands of our jobs always go up and the resources we are given to do our jobs always go down. And with the prospect of cashierless checkout, automated ordering and auto-replenishment coming in the next year, we can all expect future layoffs and restructuring with only the mere opportunity to reapply for a position at a much lower wage than before. We can expect this because it is precisely what Whole Foods has done time and time again.

Whole Worker’s mission is to improve working conditions, benefits and compensation for all Whole Foods team members. We believe the power dynamics within Whole Foods has to change, and we are using unorthodox means of collective action to accomplish this mission.

Most of us believe that the best way to accomplish our goals is to unionize all Whole Foods stores in North America, but unionizing is a long, complicated and often controversial process. What is not complicated nor controversial, however, is organizing. Organizing is simply coming together to challenge leadership with one voice. Whole Worker believes in unorthodox forms of labor organizing such as social media and mass media.

Whether or not to organize usually boils down to one question:

"Do you trust Whole Foods Global leadership?"

If so, great. If not, we invite you to get involved and help push back.

We want to make it easier for all team members to come together to express their concerns in a community that they can trust and confide in. From this, they can learn to help themselves and their fellow team members. We want team members to realize that they do have a voice, a very loud one, to make significant and important changes in this company. We want to give everyone the tools and the knowledge to stand up for what is right and good for Whole Foods Market, and we want to make that process as private and secure as possible to protect people from retaliation from leadership.

This is why we are launching a new Whole Worker public community today hosted on Telegram, an encrypted, private and non-for-profit messaging service that is used by hundreds of millions of people all around the world. We no longer use Slack simply because we couldn’t guarantee the safety of our members’ personal data. With Telegram this is not a problem.

Some of the things we are fighting for include:

Removing wage caps for long term team members

Removing the PT:FT ratio or re-working it to favor full-time work

Yearly raises that are independent of work performance

Lowering the eligibility requirements for insurance

Embracing the philosophy of added responsibility for added pay

Full-profit sharing for full-time team members

Dramatically increase staffing across the board

To join this community and see what we are all about, all you need to do is go to www.wholeworker.org which will redirect you to the Telegram public channel. You can also download the Telegram smartphone app and join using the url, t.me/wholeworker. Since Telegram is an open-source platform that values privacy, all of your personal information, your location and your phone number is kept hidden and secure. The main Whole Worker channel on Telegram is public and open for anyone to join. We will use the open channel to connect with team members who want to help build the movement and then invite those people into the various closed Telegram groups where we host our organizing committees.

We hope that this will serve as the beginning of the creation of a tight-knit community that all team members are proud to be a part of, by reiterating all of our original core values. We wish to make a better and flourishing work environment for all present and future team members.

Sincerely,

Ty Robertson, Matt, KT, SB, Rahodeb, BC, Glamazon Prime, Endora, Sol, Amazon Crime Customer, Frank Little, Muffin King, FJM and the rest of Whole Worker’s National Organizing Committee

Whole Worker is not a formal labor union as of today. In the past we have collaborated with members of RWDSU, UFCW, IWW and DSA.

Whole Worker is an organization of Whole Foods employees that engages in labor organization and concerted activity on and off the job in the interest of improving team member working conditions.

This thread makes me laugh out loud. It’s amazing how much effort people go to get out of working that they could actually save 50% of the effort if they just did their job instead of spending this much energy complaining about it. That’s whats exhausting. I feel sorry Mr. J Bezos who is the sugar daddy to 90,000 people. LOL

Christ, not this sh– again. Unlike apparently all of you mo–ns, I’ve actually worked at a unionized grocery store, Kroger. Lowest pay in the industry. Worst treatment of employees in the industry. Promotions and raises based solely on seniority, merit cannot even be considered because it’s “unfair”. The only people the union protects are people who deserve to lose their jobs.

No union. F—ing never. There are a lot of changes I'm not happy with but I will quit before I’ll tolerate working with a bunch of lazy useless union pieces of sh–.

And how the hell are we “salesmen for Amazon Prime”?! Did you somehow miss the entire Prime Training where they said 5 times in 3 different ways “DO NOT TRY TO UPSELL AMAZON PRIME TO PEOPLE”?

Don’t consider the environment before you print this thread... you may run out of toilet paper. At least now we know what happens when you hand the keys over to the shared brain of social media. It is the answer to nothing. You heard it here first and I’m not someone who has a vested interest in watching this dumpster fire ship wreck. I don’t check in here every chance I get with extreme glee! I am just one of the countless many who have been illegally fired by this shameless hillbilly s-xist texas money grubbing man-hating cartel of fraud.

That’s why I shop at the local big apple. It’s cheaper too without all the stinky pretence. And WFM....you stink like carpet cleaner.

This is why whole foods went under and was bought out , just do buisness legally like other employers the whole store knows that you know the issues but blame others.

As a collective we tl’s are acknowledging the corrupt buisness whole foods or amazon policies have generated and our stl is broken and backtracks on what she says we have recorder audio at all times during out shifts and yes they lie and even fire people due to their mistakes and are told to lie asked to lie there are 2 astl’s who in norcal who has fired soo many team members .
Why is it the incident rate and turnover rate match their transfer date?
Too many whole foods team members have been fired due to them getting hurt following expectations and standards .
Whole foods and amazon are not intrested in their workers.
Pbs be honest or you’ll be without a job and made public this means no one will hire you.

Whole foods no longer welcomes students, parents sharing custody of children or people with other jobs since they come first.
union is a must not to mention if you get hurt due to workload and stl planning to fire specific team members of specific teams to make it seem like it’s all the team leadership but notes, pics and team member witnesses are showing we have gotten to this point due to their poor leadership skills .
Like all spoiled people (wfm customers) a b–ch fit and pics are a real converter of wfm team members going union so all of us are waiting for union!

Has anyone out gotten written up without a verbal? We keep loosing team members due to the lack of proper process so when written up team members say why didn’t you just tell me I would have done what you asked ?Here is the problem if you know you are the cause for high turn over what is the plan to get new team members in and trained in one day? This is something my store leadership said to me reach out to your ac to see how to get a green team to be at a senior team member level in a day .Now what is wrong with that picture ?
We have developed a culture of taking pictures of other things wrong in the store and why our store leadership focuses and what they can see from their window ?
I hope the big wigs stop by to talk to team members we have about 53 gigs of images & emails we would like to share and see how we can get over this especially when we know what is going on.

Never hire or promote your friends they will blind you and you will never see buisness needs .The shifties do you no favors they know all and repeat everything said or emailed in the store and team members catch wind of it do be surprised when it gets back to you and it turns out it was your shifties making all team members aware of the issues at your location.

Here is a geat example of how whole foods avoids accountability all our past date po’s were created by regional and has been happening for years but product teams are liable for their performance how about that?
team members getting written up and blamed for your less than adequate regional team member.

Our sss was asked by store leadership to play ball and give market team a pass why is that? Our team pointed out expired sales tags and he just just said well i already submitted my audit and i don’t want to piss off store leadership and just did the i don’t care shoulder move and moved on.
Amazon investors need to realize that whole foods doesn’t go by the book.

a specific team in our store is allowed to come in early tl and atl but no other team can come in before 4am to do ad change alone while others have to come in no earlier than 4 am work load then do ad change .
Do you ever wonder how they get 100 by the sss audit?
If every team was married to a stl and our store stl rubbed elbows with the other stl at a sister store we would get 100% too .
Whole foods needs to get away from neopotism and set a fair playing field for all teams look at kronos not the schedules ec’s.

Nother California EC’s i challenge you to look at all the stores in Norcal and see what astl’s and stl’s are not doing closings ,are the tl’s working a full 8 hour closing a week and a mid ,what teams are excempt from duties and expectations also who which teams can have their team leader work the same hours side by side with their atl and why others don’t have that perk please email all at wfm and when you hold them to the same standard make it known and we will quit with the union sh–.

One store on team my a– they only say that after they get swamped by customers when they can’t have their 20 min conversations all front end team members do is talk while customers need assistance at the csb and ignore the customer as they just want to get their buisness done and move on.
Amazon needs to give store leadership binoculars so they can see past their field of view from the stl office window .

I’m done doing split shifts working 6-7 days for 35 hours or days where call outs happen and not knowing when the hell I’ll be off.
This is how bad things at our store are we have not had a store leadership member close in the last 10 days they have no idea what happens in the store once they leave and if team members are doing their job.

Our hours got cut to match the new hours for working because my team leader f—ed up labor now we are way below team member committment hours .
Is it legal to have team members be available 24 hrs at whole foods working 5/6 days for 35 hrs that match their peak times and then forced to quit after we are told this is the hours we have or is it a ambitious pig willing to get people fired to move on but they themselves are only a phone call away from getting fired?

If you think mandatory wage increases regardless of performance is a great idea then you need to stop smoking so much weed and get your head out of the sand. Give me one good reason why I should increase pay yearly for those who barely show up to work on time, always call out, and just about have a brain aneurism when you ask them to do one simple task. That’s how we got to where we are in the first place. Look at all the lifers who still gloat about the good old days but can barely take direction well on a new task. That’s the last thing we need more of.

Weird that the link tries to install some sort of popup? No thanks.
Secondly, some of these people are making $25 to stock cheese. You think they should continue to get raises when their new TL's and ATL's are making $16- $18? Sorry, but that s—s.
Insurance-it's awful. It's called catastrophic insurance for a reason.
I think for the most part it's crazy that people still think the old WFM can be revived. What?!
I disagree with things. Should a 110 lb person have to be able to lift 50 lbs to work there and not get injured? Why is everyone held to a standard of physical impossibility? We are not ants. I feel like they are discriminate against people with disabilities in my personal opinion.
I disagree with inventory. Managers and buyers shouldn't have to work 12 + overnight shifts or more until the job is done, or work some split shift and come back four hours later to work the 12 +. Isn't sleep somewhat important and isn't this a liability? Also, if a store wants something done, let everyone know so they don't let you down. Just because one meets regional standards doesn't mean they meet the one the store sets and doesn't tell you about until after you fail.
Managers shouldn't make you change a display 32423423 times after regional comes, then the next regional person doesn't like it and you change it again. No uniformity. Or have management disagree with something that regional tells you is correct and makes you change it so you can fail one of the walks. So many walks and tests. Your manager is being graded on it and probably trying not to have a weekly panic attack over it.
Then that lady that wears prada hats that works for WFM comes in and makes demands (I thought brands weren't allowed?) that doesn't seem to know what she's talking about (wants things that are against policies). Shouldn't everyone be held to the same standard?
Or mandatory write-ups for people that fail secret shops or make one mistake (zero tolerance policy), or trying to weed out higher paid team members.
Or keeping people that destroy morale and leaving them in charge for a decade and claim you're sending them to manager classes to get better. At least move them.
If you're not happy, move. But this is not a holier than thou business or a farmer's market. It is a conglomerate. Nice that you care about people; maybe all businesses need this. But, it's just representative of what is happening in politics. The rich are getting richer and there is nothing we can do about it. But go ahead and try, I guess. It's like this most places now and the few that are not, seem to be laying people off.
