Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Would you do it again?

Earlier this year, I left after 10 years service, and on a sour note. But my previous years of service was great. I enjoyed my colleagues and work, and my career flourished. Then my boss and his boss changed direction, the company became hostile, and it was the end of my career there. I have since moved on and am happy. But honestly, if I had the same choices again that I had 10 years ago, I would still have chosen to work for them. Would you have rather not worked for them at all, or do you also look back fondly on many happy years before the Charlie disaster struck us?

4bjb - most other companies offer much higher salary, opportunity for flexible work from home, much better incentive/bonus and a non-toxic work environment. Glad you mentioned the high cost of benefits here because it is out of control at BNYM. If you aren't feeling well and need to seek a doctor, there goes that 1% 401k pension contribution they make because you will need to pay nearly $100 for that doctor visit.

I also recently left BNY, found a job in another company. For me BNY has mostly been great. It's just that in this particular group I was doing the same things, have not been learning much, and moving internally at BNY, in my experience, is quite tough. If there was a good, interesting opportunity at BNY in the future, I would certainly consider joining them again.

Some of the benefits at BNY are unmatched. I am comparing with the other major banks.

For example, BNY matches 401K up to 5% (4% at 100% and 2% at 50%) + give you a free 2% gift to your 401K as pension plan (after you have worked there for 3 years). I got an offer from a major canadian bank (their NY office) - they only gave 3% match. Many other major firms give 3-4%.

But the healthcare costs at BNY went up quite a bit in 2019. That was not great.

I worked for a boutique for ten years, went under BNY in July then was laid off in January. The boutique life is 1 million times better. BNY is straight trash. I only officially worked for them for 6 months but what a fcking joke it was. If you’re a client or a prospective employee stay the hell away.

Worked for 8 Financial Institutions but never chose to work here. Happened to get acquired. Honestly had thought that I’d seen it all in 40+ years but I have never experienced this level of organizational dysfunction.

Nope, but I never did it in the first place. We were acquired by BNY and my manager and team remained intact for a long while. We got promotions, worked on great projects, and loved the team spirit and accomplishments that we shared. But we were gradually incorporated into the company, and lost what made our former company such a great place to work. Shame on BNY to destroy such spirit and productivity. I never interviewed for BNY, I don’t want to work here, and I am trying to get away.

Once your eyes are open to people's true nastiness and cutthroat behavior, they can't be closed.

Even after Charlie leaves, and that day will come, (likely soon), managers and teammates I once upon a time respected, I now see as incorrigible because of their maliciousness and pettiness.

I would not do it again. I'd rather work for a company where respect is mutual, from the CEO to building maintenance staff, even in difficult times.
