Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

Sam's Club ...A bridge too Far...

Seems to me that it does not really matter what a person is codded as in the computer. Meaning so what if HO says every one who is in the merchandising group has to learn photo and jewelry. That does not mean that the persons who were coded in those jobs before can not continue to be the ones who do those jobs primarily. If Billy was the photo guy why not let him keep being the photo guy even though the computer thinks he is now just a merchandiser along with the rest of us chumps?

As managers surely you can see that this new system is full of pitfalls that are inescapable. Rather than resort to abusive tactics like dropping so much that can not be done why not be reasonable so as to not work your horses to death. The system is not working and will never work without a bunch more people. By pretending that this can work just so you can look good to HO you are doing nothing but assuring the clubs fail even faster.

Few if any new workers are going to stay more than a few days once they come in and witness the chaos that you as managers are only making worse by pretending it will ever work. One of the absolutely most insane things I see is overloading the stockers thinking they will move faster because there is more to do. Nope all that does is demoralize otherwise good workers who will eventually give up trying because trying gets them nothing but ever increasing workloads.

Blindly following the commands of HQ gets many men k--led in the military without necessity. Watch a movie called A bridge too Far. In it you will see how Sams is going to collapse and you gutless managers will have helped it fall by not doing the right things instead of blindly following orders.

With block scheduling the photo person may not be working during the main photo hours. Also, now you are photo/st ocker when everyone else is just stocker? it's terrible for all involved.

The managers in our Club try to cover all the bases everyone here is talking about. The Photo and Jewelry associates went to COS, other Photo associate is door greeter, thus when a member needs assistance, then the COS's are available. Note that all COS can run jewelry and most can run photo. As far as merchandisers; we have both managers, the Fresh managers and four associates that can run both departments including TBA. If Click and Pull orders are heavy, a manager prints paper pick sheets, gives out to associates in building, then fifteen or twenty minutes later we have the first ten or so orders being scanned in. These managers saw the writing on the wall a long time ago and started two plus years ago training associates in other departments. They said then it was job security; the more you know how to do, the more valuable you are in the company hierarchy if it ever comes to a reduction in force. They were right, and I hope we keep these managers forever. We are not perfect, but we have a great team we just need some dedicated people to apply and actually come to work.

2aab I am the originator of this post. We are in the same situation you are. My point is this. If I were a manager I would simply use my ex photo person to continue with photo even though they are now a merchandise group person. Same with click and pull. Same with jewelry. It makes not sense to make random people do these jobs when we have folks already trained nd we versed in those areas.

In doing this the club would be much more able to run smoothly in this new paradigm. Managers already thwart HO orders in every way they can why not in this too?

Making all stockers pull orders , do jewelry , do photo , do audits etc is not going to make the club run better it is only going to make it laden with more mediocrity.

Being someone who came from a specific department it’s not that we or least I don’t want to be in my original department and help out.... we have 3 hours to stock over 100 pallets most morning before we open to members. Then told we need to finish all those pallets and get mixed pallets and truck stock that just came in out to the floor and stocked. We have multiple managers telling us each to do different things, floor team leads telling us to do other things and front end calling us to do other things also! Then get yelled at for not getting everything done. I work a long side multiple hard workers and generally good people and always try to help out where I can but everyone needs to realize that each person is only one person.

I agree just because jewelry associates are coded merchandising does not mean that the can't do jewelry. If they are available hell yes they should do jewelry and anyone else who is available to do so. The whole club is everyone's responsibility not just the member team leads. God knows they have enough on their plate. If you here a jewelry call go ahead and take care of it. Easy peasy.

As a human being you DO have a choice as to whether you enforce policies in such a way as to be abusive..or to try to accommodate HO while still treating people like people and not animals to be run ragged..with the huge amount some managers are dropping combined with the many other things folks are being tasked with abuse and recklessness are the correct descriptions of what is occurring..something is going to give under this pressure and the managers who choose not to be human will be equally responsible for that as HO...either business will suffer or humans will suffer ..maybe both...

Managers don't have a whole lot of choices in the changes. They either do them are will be replaced by someone who will. As far as the same people doing jewelry and photo that is what is done at our club. After opening the people who use to be in those areas break off and go to the area they was in. Same with click and pull its the same people doing it they are just coded as merchandisers. There is however more people being trained to work those areas since they originals will be getting off around 11 or 12 everyday.
