Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Chevron climate change strategy

Is it just me or is Chevron going to be demolished by a slow moving freight train due to its lack of strategy in the area of climate change, the move away from fossil fuels, and increasing electrification? I mean this sincerely, whether you believe in ACC or not.

Sure, fossil fuels have been amazing for humanity, and it's a hell of a business to be in, but it will be the future economic, societal and regulatory landscape that calls the shots, not business as usual. We find and produce hydrocarbons to make money, not to make hydrocarbons.

Other operators are making shrewd moves in this area (e.g. Shell positioning to become world's largest electricity provider - yep, electricity, not "energy"). We have our head in the sand and are going to be left decades behind in preparing for what lay ahead.

It took us until 2018 to kick off a digital transformation program, with untold opportunity cost from not acting sooner (a decade later than any self respecting multinational). Similarly we are going to be late to deal with what will be the greatest challenge our industry has ever seen, while our competitors mop the floor with us.

@1ion you couldn’t have said it more correctly. If only I was able to press the + button more times, I’d give your remark a 10+.

Is this post a joke? If OP is so worried about fake human caused global warming, so-called climate change, then quit working in the oil business.

As long as demand keeps going up by a million barrels/day every year like clockwork, I'm not worried: https://www.indexmundi.com/energy/

Chevron’s, and everyone’s else, big push to the Permian basin is a big punt... a short term position to put fast cash in and get profits out fast. The focus point of uncertainty: will big new platforms really pay off over 20 plus years to recover investment. The answers are not clear. Petroleum will be around for a long time, for energy and chemicals (plastics), but is it a growth industry or in decline. A slow decline is never any fun... for anyone!

How do you make electricity? What about airplanes, ships and trucks? How are you going to replace plastics, petrochemicals that build virtually anything from your bottle of water to 80% of cars? Get real, fossil fuel will be here for good another 50 year if not more.

Electricity? Return on investment is so low compared to Oil&Gas and profits are heavily regulated. It does sound right. I rather buy separate shares for electricity companies rather than O&G companies with more focus on electricity.
