I wonder how this will affect UP coal trains. Coal in the US is on a downward spiral as a whole.

Coal, which was largest revenue producer of western railroads is going away and not coming back. Railroads are preparing for this. Next to go will be some of the parallel main lines acquired with SP merger as too expensive to maintain all. If you know history of CN-ICG, they took out double main between Chicago and New Orleans and put in longer side tracks.

Well it will hurt BNSF since they service these mines.
I think we all need to remember that the greed of the railroads is helping to contribute to the demise of coal. They want point a to b trains and these are perfect for us. But once a wind turbine, solar panels or natural gas plant get put up there is only maintenance on the turbines and panels and there are natural gas lines every where in the us. I don't want to see the railroad go to government control but at what point are the railroads destroying America
I’ve seen so many coal-fired power plants and have yet to see any black smoke coming out of any of them. You’re lucky to see a little steam...k--ling coal is ridiculous. We’ll need way more electricity when everybody drives “clean” electric vehicles. Better not count coal out just yet, since the environmentalists don’t like hydro, nuclear, natural gas, or ethanol. Windmills and solar panels can’t keep up.

Doubt two mines closing will do much of squat. But that’s a pretty good reason for laying off workers...going bankrupt. UP is just greedy.
