Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

I envy those who can quit

I'm really not in that position - we are tied here through my wife's job for several more years, so no moving before then. And there are few other options nearby. Being laid off would work perfectly for me, but so far no luck there. I'd volunteer, but I have a feeling if I let them know I want out, they'll just make sure to wait me out.

So I am stuck in this hellhole for who knows how long. So yes, I envy those who can quit and be rid of all this.

I retired early last year. I know my circumstances are different than others, but I just couldn't take it anymore. Now I work part time doing something I love for 11 an hr. and I pay over 700 a month for healthcare.... so glad I left. It was a good company at one time and so glad I had the opportunity, after 40 years it was just a P.I.T.A.

Are there no other jobs where you are? If you would be capable of volunteering instead of working then working anywhere else would be worth it. I took a lateral move but because my healthcare is so much cheaper and better it is almost like getting a raise. And as for the person that says they'd be a fool not to wait for the redundancy package - I can only assume that you're not in the US where we went from getting 1 week of pay for every year to being cut to 8-12 weeks with only 2 weeks of healthcare. IMO, if you are in the US and you provide health coverage for your family, you can't afford to wait for that meager package. It could take 6 month's to find a new job and Cobra coverage is insane. And if you make "too" much then even the health exchange is too costly. I personally needed the peace of mind to not have that gap on my resume. The older you are the less you can afford it.

I plan on leaving sometime in the near future as I have other things lined up and just waiting for the perfect opportunity. I've love to get a package, but those are hard to plan for as you never know what groups and organizations will have reductions and get a package. It seems the voluntary packages are done, as I haven't heard of one in nearly a couple years now.

I had to leave. Had been with my XBS company for 5+ years but also have kids so didn't want to try to deal with cobra during severance/unemployment.

Same here OP, I feel ya. I'd be a fool to leave now and lose the redundancy package. Unless I manage to find a really excellent offer, but still don't want to leave to JohnV & Co. all my hard earned money.
