Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Did anyone ever feel like we had over staff departments?

I always felt when I work at this company that we had a ton of lazy individuals who needed to be "layed off" . I am not saying all people but the ones who got laid off in the department were truly bad/lazy employees. Anyone who still works there is either a good employee who is looking for a new job/stuck or an employee who does not have good credentials to find a better job than 30-45K due to always processing for years. If it is harsh that is fine but curious as to others on how they feel about the lays off who did not get fired or left because of it.

For every productive worker there, there are 5 lazy ones. That was my experience in operations, anyhow. And the good workers were punished by having more dumped on them, while the slackers were never held accountable (and were, essentially, rewarded by having lighter work loads). Participation in food days seemed to trump performance. When I moved out of there, it was a different world; by the time I left, everyone was spread so thinly, no one could afford to be lazy, with the exception of upper management. BNYM certainly had a lot of waste and expendable employees, but it has never been their style to dump that waste. They let good people go, then replace them with someone who will never be properly trained, to perpetuate the cycle of incompetence. If that offends you, you're probably not one of the good ones.

Yes the lazy slackers are the always the ones that got spared from layoffs. Not just because they "know" someone high in the management though, but more because they spend most of the day networking, trading secrets, planning get together and gossiping.. At some point it’s all relationships and politics and hard workers simply don’t have the time for that BS. I blame management... managers need to get out more and learn what’s going on under them.... that is if we don’t want to keep displacing our superstars.

Unfortunately in my group, the lazy slackers are the one that got spared from the layoffs because they "know" someone high in the management. In my team, the slackers ratio is actually higher than the people who work hard. The one who got laid off are the hardworking one but higher salary or the project are not as crucial. The management has forced us to have to put someone as BE even though they have met the performance standards so they can use that as grounds for layoff. The Performance review in my team is no longer fair and accurate but politically driven. It all depends who you know in the management.

Layoffs can happen to anyone at any time. It's foolish to think that a person who was laid off, deserved it. Until it happens to you, I wouldn't judge. People need to understand compassion for one another.

BNY made me a lazy employee. First it was 1% raise because I was near top of pay scale, then it was 0% for same reason. Next was the dreaded BE rating to justify why I'm not getting a raise again. Worked all the stupid hours they asked and was always there and never out sick. I feel like I was deliberately not trained on anything new coming in. I was setup to fail. Anyway, been done with this place and riding it out.

I wasn’t a bad employee nor was I lazy!! I worked all types of hours to get things done for this company. I would be in that building before the over night security went home and leaving after the cleaning crew. I think that your post is unnecessary and insensitive; especially since you working for BNY was in the past. Move along buddy and take your negativity with you!

We had a few lazy workers, but its been that way everywhere I have worked. Here, they weren’t generally among the first let go, but are mostly gone by now. The people we have left are mostly good workers, even though morale is terrible and we continue to be what seems like a random target of the Below Expectations quota. Those who can leave, will. The rest off us just hope for the best, whatever that will be. Maybe some of us will even turn into “lazy” workers. But I am lucky to work in a good group with a good manager and we still have work. I do realize this could change abruptly any day, as it has for others. Good luck to us all!

Why are the hard workers being laid off rather than the non-hard workers? I believe that’s what happened to me.

LOL. Well, I was lazy I guess, rarely took a lunch break, exceeded expectations most years and didn't call off work for over half a decade. The non-lazy people in my group were the come in laters, long- lunchers and smoke break every hour people. Guess who got laid off? Lazy a** me.

If you're getting paid only $21.6/hour ($45K yearly) then what do you expect but lazy people. I wouldn't say people are "lazy" but people output the amount of work based on their pay and $21.6-federal_tax&state_tax would leave a person with about $16-18 depending on their tax percentage. In some states, $15 is min pay. So for a bank to pay $16-18 isn't much when all those corp exec, directors, manager are making millions.

I say, don't criticize your fellow employee but criticize the top level management. If they want expect more out of an employee then pay them more for the job they need to do.

Also, for some employees, after working for so many years with the company and the company doesn't appreciate the employee for exceeding the job expectations, the employee tends to just give up because they don't even get a "Thank You" or "I really appreciate the excellent work you've done". When all that hard work goes into the pockets of top management, you end up asking yourself if it was all really worth it. Even after all the stress and health issues that come with it and now a days, once the company lays off, there don't even cover your health insurance. So you get all the stress, all the health issues, no appreciation, no pay increase (that really makes a difference) and can get laid off within a flash of a second with no health insurance for you or family. The Bank will go on with or without you, so instead of bashing your colleagues, please support them.

The people who are left are the s---ers who know how to play the game which eventually will all get layed off as well. I feel like the ones left over are getting their punishment and living a slow death there.
