Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Hi, I've got a question.... If the economy is so great why is BNYM doing layoffs?

Well? I'm waiting for your answer.

The layoffs have nothing to do with our current economy, which is MOST DEFINITELY THRIVING!

So frustrating knowing I am here at work surrounded by a bunch of id--ts.

Ford laying of 7K. Possible ATI plant closure. Highmark, I believe laying off 150 IT workers. Dress barn closing all stores. This is just from the last 7 days or so and I forgot a couple. The economy is selectively good.

Oh, and the person who said companies need to make a profit ( by laying off) should read about economic theory.

So many companies are laying off... maybe the “great economy” is FAKE NEWS?

Organic shrinkage from 12 years of mismanagement.

Hi @uym

The saying that ‘companies exist to make profit for a shareholder’ is only partially correct. Companies cannot exist without:

  • Customers

  • Employees

  • Vendors

  • State/nation

So, you cannot just make it about shareholders – all five need to be satisfied in order for things to work out. You screw one group, you’ll at some point pay for it.

I’d probably put the state at the first place as without it we’ll be just dust in the wind, conquered and subjugated. We take this for granted as we are a big and powerful country, but if we continue betraying it we’ll fall and wither. Honestly, I am against everything the current administration is pushing onto us except this part (I doubt they mean it though)…

Many countries have economic systems where the shareholder is in the middle of the pack I listed above – and they are doing just fine. I am not sure how I’d fix this but saying that it’s all about the shareholder is a fallacy IMHO.

Hey we one per centers gotta live too. You lay a outs are always complaining about the great schools we send our kids to, the great vacations we take, the fantastic wines we drink and the awesome Michelin restaurants we eat in, we deserve this. You guys need to whine less and put your should to your precarious jobs with ever diminishing benefits and get on with it. Come on people let’s make corporate America great again. Senor don

Because BNYM has been operating with an antiquated business model that should have been abandoned ten years ago. The best companies know what it takes to keep up with the times. Those that don't will lose. Face it, you are working for a loser.

This is short-sighted. While there is some correlation between the US economy and business performance, it isn't 1:1. Whether the economy is up or down, the company exists to make a profit for shareholders. If the company can operate with fewer employees and cut expenses, why wouldn't they? It's tough for individuals...but this is a business.

Yeah, why are we living in fear each day worrying about getting laid off?

News tells me the economy is strong. Yet I live in daily fear of getting laid off.

Makes no sense to me.
