Once upon a time we were a company with values and integrity. I began my career in the NW division, The Bon Marche'. I worked my way up to the buying offices in Seattle in 1979. We were Allied Stores back then. Way before the buyout with O'Campo. We had some challenging times, but over all we maintained a loyal customer base and our leadership had integrity. Most selling associates were long timers, average was 10 years at the time. We had experienced, talented selling staff that excelled in their jobs and our sales reflected this. Times were good for the most part.
The difference, Management that knew how to run a company successfully and did not over extend our debt. Once we were merged and became Federated the happy times were gone. Then came chapter 11 and challenging times. We made it though. Then came Bloomingdales, Macy's. We actually bought Macy's they went bankrupt. Ummmmm, see a repeat?
Granted, times have changed with the consumer. My reason for writing this note. We are headed for one heck of a recession, it is already beginning. For the talented sales folks out there, get out while the getting is good. Macy's is not going to survive. You can bring in all the Harry Lawton's of the world and the Magic of Gennette, (who I am ashamed of). His talent turned to star dust.
You guys and gals with boots on the ground have made the company. Be proud of your accomplishments, but know that the time is over. Do me a favor and brush up those resumes now. Submit one a week to another company. Do not wait for the layoff. Do this on your terms. For those that enjoy the retail environment, go to a leading retailer. My suggestion Amazon.
Best of luck to all.........
