What makes us so sure we’ll be market leaders in 5G?

Everybody keeps talking about VZ being the ultimate market leader when 5G rolls out, as it were an unchangeable fact. What makes us so sure that’s gonna be the case with such a tough competition that also desperately wants to grab a bigger piece of the pie? Maybe the announcement that we will deploy 5G first. Even that isn't certain to the degree we take it for

T-Mobile and AT&T are claiming they're rolling out 5G.

Anyone know how this is going to be rolled out?

Is a light pole in a city served by three 5G companies going to have three antennae to beam out the signal for each company, like a cell tower, or is there going to be some sort of sharing mechanism worked out? And what of the fibers that are feeding these antennae - shared or multiple fibers to the same drop-off?

It seemed easier in the old days, during the original copper build, with one eventual entity, AT&T, rising as the main structure.

Are areas going to be divvied up rather than having antenna redundancy? It seems some might object to the aesthetic pollution of antenna after antenna after antenna hogging up poles and light posts and lawns and highways.

Is anyone hearing that 5g may be dangerous and cancer causing?

Watched something online that states 5g towers emit radiation and it scientists say that it could cause cancer. They said that in some countries including Sweden that people are complaining of radiation poisoning from the 5g towers.

No consensus in the scientific community yet due to no confirmed research but the hypothesis is 5g will cause cancer and other radiation poisoning like effects.

Anyone internal to Verizon hearing anything like this. Hq or in the field... at the company or with their own private research

VZ problem is the lack of lower band frequencies, i.e sub 3GHz which are needed to build coverage. 28GHz can be used as capacity layer as there the allocated band has more available spectrum. 5G will be only available in restricted areas where a lot of users/devices reside e.g. sports arenas etc.

I would closely follow TMo/Sprint, if merger is approved they will have plenty of frequencies to implement nationwide network.

What comes to the use of 5G, most likely the k--ler application is still unknown or not existing. My bet is on the side on entertainment, virtual reality and gaming. Industrial connectivity is interesting also, but for every day user non visible.

Of course we can't forget the increased near real time monitoring of citizens which can be enabled with 5G and edge processing using existing camera infrastructure.

Only the carriers care about 5g. It is a desperate move to try and manufacture growth in an otherwise stagnent and saturated wireless business.

The general public could give a $hit about 5g myself included. I get everything I need from 4g and until I am shown something that comes exclusively from 5g that benefits me, all the 5g biz blab marketing hoo haw is pure noise. In one ear and out the other.

Great question. It actually does all come back to spectrum. VZ has an s-ton of it compared to their peers. And that s-ton of spectrum is what allows that 1 gig download speed. T-mob will launch 5G in their low band (600 MHz), but it really won’t be much faster than VZ’s 4G. Seriously, it might get up to 100 Mbps, but it won’t touch 1 gig. The RF pipe is just too small compared to the one that VZ is setting up in the mm wave region (39 GHz and 28 GHz, IIRC). So yeah, there will be VZ's 5G and there will be everyone else's. Eventually VZ will have some 5G in lower bands as well, but it will be for coordinating 5G in the upper bands or for applications where you need super low latency but not heavy bandwidth. I've always heard self-driving cars being the big draw for that.

I can't guarantee that 5G will make VZ great, but I will hang my hat that they will lead the pack when it comes to download speeds.

VZ will fail with 5g. The spectrum which they chose to deploy 5G is so high (28000MHZ) that it requires 20-50 cell sites to match that of current 700MHZ 4G coverage. 5G signals are affected by rain, weather, and moving just an inch.

Other providers will launch 5G in lower band not affected by all of that and will not require as many cell sites.
