Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Demotions in addition to layoffs

I survived the layoffs but I was demoted along with many others. I will retain my current salary for one year. After that, it will be lowered to be compatible in the new lower salary range. When I retire, my pension will be lower as a result being based on the last 5 years of base salary. I am still being asked to perform the same job with the same responsibilities. I was working 9-10 hour days without overtime. I was planning to retire in a few years. Staying will not be better for me.

Has this really been happening? Is this legal? This seems blatantly wrong on every level. Is there anything to be done in these situations?

Dude, he is telling you that if you stay a LL5 you are toast — your name is on the next up to be cut list. Get that resume out and start looking now, at LL5 you will have more trouble finding something as you haven’t done “real” work in awhile.
If your house is not paid off or you have any debt, get it paid off now! Those that got clipped and have zero debt are happy free birds. Those that got clipped and had debt suffered.
Also focus on your health. Most LL5+ are not healthy, I saw guys putting on 20+ pounds a year.

I’m an LL5, 30 years, and my director just asked, “wouldn’t you be happier as an LL6?” And later “you haven’t been working as an LL5 this year” (after they stripped my people and objectives with SRD). So now I think the best move is to find another job and retire. It’s a sad way to end a career, but it’s how the company works now.

I know people who were told they were no longer needed and given SIRP paperwork. They were able to find jobs in other areas but had to take a demotion to stay. Their old jobs are empty boxes in the new org. This sickens me. The company can stop with those hogwash Our Truths because this is no way to Do the right thing or Put people first.

Wow. So, they demote you. Cut your salary. Tell you to go buy a car cause your management lease is gone.

Do you feel appreciated yet? THat sounds like management that wants you out on your own accord.

The biggest insult of all is while they were busy laying off and demoting people, they were promoting others. This was nothing more than an excercise in elimation of older more experienced people and replacement with younger less experienced. Hackett is obsessed with youth and has nothing but disdain for any employee over the age of 30. It's so sad to see Ford treat those whose dedicated work saved the company during the last downturn.

There were a few in my area. Not the best, but not the worst, however I would not wish that on anyone. They had some things in common: white, male, over 45, etc. With the latest round of cuts, diversity initiatives were definitely enforced. Leaves me very uneasy, because this is my future and I can't avoid it. Yeah I'll get the down votes for white privilege, etc. However, these policies do not foster equality, meritocracy, or development of technical skill. It basically enforces one of two things. 1. Be the one who used to be the go to person, see yourself get power passed left and right by people who work less and have less experience, throttle back and go with the flow. Do not tell leadership what to do when asked, because they know better. 2. Be the one who blindly accepts these positions all knowing you do not have the merit or experience necessary to be effective. Constantly repeat the same mistakes that others made before you, because people under you are going to realize you are not fit to lead and shut down. Either way both paths are a cancer eating at the core of the company. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and I would think that we had become smarter about promotions, not using dated initiatives from the 90s or the 00s. I guess not.

IDK there are 3 years out of college IT making much more than 30 service year IT workers.

The veterans started with salaries in 30k range and received Ford average raises for 30 years.

Some of the veterans make less than the starting salary for a college graduate. Veterans with children starting their career at Ford have found their 20 something child making more money than they do, while doing considerably less work and having significantly less responsibilities.

The only reason many of the veterans keep working hard at Ford is the carrot of the 30 year and out pension. Then to have it snatched away a few yards from the goal post is devastating.

I almost had the dangling carrot in my hand. Fourteen months short before it was snatched away.

Hind sight I should of left decades ago and gotten decent salary bumps. Certainly my career advice to my children has changed.

Best of Luck to all going through this mess.

I’ve seen it in my area too. One LL6 I worked for in the past was demoted. I’m not exaggerating when I say he was the best manager I’ve ever worked for. He didn’t just manage his team, he mentored them. I learned a lot from him and I’m much better as a result. There is no way his demotion could have been performance related but he is in his mid 50’s with about 30 years

Yes, it’s really happening. I heard of several LL’s that were Demoted. All were 30 year guys in their 50’s and hard workers. One of them was told my his management it had nothing to do with performance. I guess within a structural reorganization, anything is legal

A coworker recently said that at the end of the year, the execs will give themselves huge bonuses for "successfully diverting the company awsy from a crisis"!

First they stab you in the back. Snd then slowly they will twist it

Yes it’s really happening. I have 23 yrs, am 54 years old, an LL6, and was “demoted” (aka Red Circled”, aka “IGP/ Individual Grade Protection”). I know all the sayings “It’s not Personal”, “ It’s just Business”.... but it feels like a slap in the face and makes me feel embarrassed and humiliated.

Unfortunately this does happen to many LL in the company. It maybe best for you retire and get a job with another company.

The New reality is the company will take what it wants, when it wants. It’s unfortunate, but you have very limited rights anybody. I’m not sure what is more indignant, being let go, or demoted. Sorry for your situation.
