IBM doesn’t innovate anymore. They purchase innovative companies sometimes.
I feel sorry for young grads coming on because they see IBM as a “stable” company.
This is very much true. When we were innovating, we were on top. Then innovation got pushed aside for the sake of quick profit, and things started going downhill fast.
I miss the good old days, to be honest.
Former IBMer. Innovation and ethics left this company in 2002ish. 10K+ lost their jobs after 9/11. But, they were going downhill already... They allowed competitors software to take the lead even on IBM hardware. The IBM software products were never well marketed and given due priority. Why would you promote ORACLE over DB2? Then they sold off laptops. Now Lenovo. They let marketing lead instead of Engineering and today is the result.
They really are similar if you look at the decline of Sears stores and why it happened.
Old antiquated processes, unwillingness to adapt to the times.
Old crows just waiting for payouts and screw the next generation mentality.
B2B is not IBM's forte now so they need to cross over into other sectors if they want to survive.
Look where Apple makes most their $ and you will see it's not in some SaaS nonsense.
IBM is the sears of tech. It is a sad place to be. I would happily take a layoff this week. I would also tell anyone young to never apply or jump ship. There is no career at IBM.
We innovate a lot but we have difficult time finding things that make money.
It's easy to come up with new things, finding profitable new things is a different story.
I had no idea IBM Lenovo had a server group. Guess that shows you how unpopular Lenovo is when IBMers themselves don't even use their products. lol
No surprise they're laying people off.
