Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Layoffs - Is it contained to GTS and GBS or will hardware be hit too ?

The only rumors we are hearing is from this site and it seems to be focused on GTS. Is Hardware expected to take a hit too ? Power is a mess. Its leader was pushed out at the end of 2018 and replaced with a business person from India. There is no direction and very few products on the road map. In Austin, the lease of the building ends in 2021 and they are very secretive on future plans for the site. I think most are just going through the motions waiting to see what happens next.

Supporting CISC apps was like jumping off the high dive into a pool with no water.

Does IBM make HW. Honestly you have to ask that. Of course IBM makes HW (do mainframe, and Power boxes sound familiar). Will HW be hit. Yep. Why. Because IBM is moving to cloud, and cloud means delivering cycles, infrastructure, and services (Power, mainframe, Intel) cheaper and more efficiently. Cloud needs HW to deliver those cycles, infrastructure, and services. HW is best viewed by IBM as a cost of doing business. IBM would prefer to not make that HW (mainframe and Power) but since they are the only guys in the world who make Mainframe and Power, they are stuck making it. Will they downsize to a skeleton crew at the plants making it. You bet they will. Why will IBM stay in the Mainframe, and Power business. Because they are VERY and I mean VERY profitable. Will IBM and ISV’s try and move as much middleware and their legacy SW that runs on Mainframe and Power to LINUX. Again you bet they will. Why do you think IBM bought Redhat. (to replace a lot of the middleware and legacy SW). Will IBM be able to move “all” of the legacy and middleware off of the Mainframe or Power boxes? Not in a lifetime Will IBM be able to move a “lot” of it. Yep. THUS HW is viewed as a cost of doing business. Without HW, IBM would have no cloud business

Global markets will have them, likely right after close. What's odd is that GM just shifted a bunch of people from GM to GTS today. Maybe lay them off from GTS, or backfilling GTS cuts?

Hardware is a dying product line - best to get out before it's sent to pasture. Even software is shrinking - the new cloud strategy is all about multi-cloud and services focused, not on products.
