Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Ibew raiload union, what is it that they do?

During these horrible times of layoffs where is the IBEW Railroad? So far i haven't seen them do anything except collect union dues for a job they dont even do.... No helping of furlough employees finding another job, they dont notify other ibew unions to see if they can take in our guys, no picketing during off time when we have company from Omaha, no information about furloughs in ibew newspaper, no training to help guys get other jobs, no communication on what can be done to save jobs..so what is it that they do?

If you are a licensed electrician or if you are a comm tech. Go to a local Ibew electrical construction hall. Talk to an organizer at the hall, sign the books and go to work. See what a real union is all about!! Unions are only as strong as the weakest member. When members make deals with management for their own interests it breaks down conditions.

The insurance is so expensive because of the unions. They voted for obamacare under the agreement that they ould be exempted taxation on the cadillac plans and obama went back on his word. The unions share a lot of the blame for the high insurance prices.

Oh, and I'm now non union, get paid more, and will never go back to union. The IBEW s---s.

The guys I saw who won in the arbitration process should have been fired and were classified by others as “POS”...

They are powerless in the lay-off process and useless in negotiating contracts. I kept my nose clean, did my job so I was not worried about arbitration. Now I am furloughed. Thanks Union...

Your pay would likely be less and your insurance premiums would probably be more and you could be fired for any reason if you weren't an IBEW member. Have you not seen the arbitration process get people their jobs back? I have....even when the employee deserved termination. If non-IBEW jobs are so great and plentiful and better then you should go get one. I'm not saying that sarcastically. Seriously...why would you stay? People who complain a lot rarely understand the legal constraints and obligations that unions must adhere to. This isn't the Jimmy Hoffa wild wild west anymore. The IBEW is filing more claims against the company than they have in a long time. However, the processing takes time and the company has many lawyers and very deep pockets. If you have found the company violating terms of our contract or subsequent agreements by all means take it to your local.

In our local meetings, we’ve discussed what is being done and where furloughed employees are winding up. Probably happening at your local meetings, too. You should try attending and you’d have more answers than you can get on this lay-off site.

You can transfer your ticket to the construction local. You have to understand that they aren't just going to take you as a journeyman wireman without any kind or prior experience so you will have to take some kind of test and acquire a local license. The so called electrical work on locomotives isn't the same at all. The RR doesn't require much qualification or knowledge to be a journeyman. In most areas the construction pay is much better anyways. And you work M-F 7-3:30.

In general unions collect dues and say “well they can do that” when you go to them with anything. Yeah they can do it because you let them get away with it. Before I joined a union I believed what I saw in movies about them. Thought they were a force to reckon with. What a laugh. In the real world Unions just sit by and watch the carnage unfold like the rest of us. I know there are still a few good local union reps. I’m talking about the full time guys that don’t work on the ground anymore and the union is their only “job”.
