IBM CEO: AI-driven ‘new collar’ jobs are coming, and it’s up to businesses to prepare a new generation of workers

“This is an example of a new model of education … a way for this new era that kids [may] not

necessarily have a college degree,” Rometty said of the program that is now in its seventh year. “I need

that workforce for my company and I need society to want these technologies and not be divided over

them.”

“I need that workforce for my company Translation: "After we RA a small city's worth of highly seasoned, deeply experienced, largely degreed employees who are probably mostly Caucasian and male, we're going to replace them with lesser educated, lower paid, hyper-diverse noobs. And we're going to keep doing it annually."

And be sure to watch the 13 minute video for more infuriating snippets, such as this one near the 6:30 mark: "15% of our hiring in the United States last year was what we called New Collar. 15%. And we hire thousands and thousands." So no qualms about divulging the number hired, especially in this case given the diversity of the hires, but how about providing the same information on how many do you fire?

Rometty needs to go. Absolute disgrace what she has done to IBM and screwed over the shareholders. She and the entire executive team need to be held accountable and fired.

Ginni to IBM is like Pelosi to California.

Just look at the skid row videos of Los Angeles on YouTube.

IBM is becoming a skid row company.

Ginni’s pr-scrip-ion to fix IBM seems to be doubling down on “cheap labor”. Cheap bandwidth and a rise in offshore skill levels has made that “double down” bet moot. Ginni is really looking for innovation, and that mostly comes via a highly educated, highly motivated work force that she seems to be down sizing for cheap labor. Her bet is a complete double down on Palmisano’s bet that labor costs could be a pass thru to end user customers. Ginni and Sam never anticipated off shore skills could fill the labor gap. As CEO, she should have realized the changing market place, and adjusted IBM’s strategy accordingly. Innovation is where Cloud, Blockchain, flash, AI, cognitive, etc etc boom. She never got the innovation message, and the marketplace zoomed past her. Does she need to be replaced. You bet. Innovation is what made IBM, and is where IBM’s future lies. Ginni still hasn’t gotten the message. It’s well past Time for a new CEO and Exec management team. (IBM Board are you paying attention) As for the s-x of a new CEO, I don’t give a damn, just so they understand innovation is where the future of IBM lies (NOT in cheap labor)

She's been using that phrase "new collar" for awhile, and while it's intended to convey the idea that AI is going to create all these wonderful new category-defying jobs, what it really means is "we're going to take a bunch of people without college degrees from impoverished areas in the middle of nowhere, put them through a few week bootcamp, and train them to be programmers so that we can pay them a fraction of what we pay actual programmers, in order to make more profit on low end coding contracts."
