Thread regarding Ford layoffs

When do the lower managers find out that their teams are being hit by layoffs?

I doubt that they find out early, given that those decisions are made many tears higher, and the lower managers are also hit in one way or another. On the other hand, when layoffs are done managers don’t act surprised and you can tell that they’ve known about it. So, when do they really find out about layoffs?

I’m not sure the LLs get to pick which direct reports are walked out. I’m an LL6 who was let go and I don’t think my LL5 or LL4 knew it was coming. I was told by my LL3 and when I told my LL5 he looked shocked and worried. I was working on some assignments that were considered necessary and had recently been given additional work. I don’t think I would have been involved in some of my assignments if they knew I was leaving. Of course it could vary by organization and it’s possible that some are aware.

Yes the LL6 pick the GSR, the LL5 pick the LL6, the LL4 pick the LL3 you get the idea.

They have known for months who was going. In some cases they forced crazy project schedules with promise of comptime when project completed, paid OT was not an option. Then when project was completed mid May pink slips were handed out the next week.

The lower level provide the names to the higher level.

The higher level takes the rap for the lower level, so they can claim they knew nothing and were just as surprised as anyone else.

My LL6 says that all the 5's and 6's in our area are safe but knows nothing about GSR's. I have serious doubts that she doesnt know.

In most cases lower level managers are given numbers and decide, they pick those they like least. Higher level managers listen to rate the rationale but usually don't override
