Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

The railroad hasn't changed, but...

It is well known that the railroad business is ruthless by nature. It always has been. Just look at how the railroad acquired land and built their physical infrastructure (by genocide and indentured labor).

Now think about the extremely sanguinary relationship the railroad had with organized labor from the 1890s through the 1920s. Look up "Grover Cleveland breaks railroad strike" for a good example.

Fast forward to the present day. The railroad hasn't changed, but their tools and methods have. Anyone who doesn't know how dirty, duplicitous, litigious, and bureaucratic the railroad is, is either uninformed or in denial.

One thing is different. Hedge fund managers are destroying the company, not building anything but the stock value. No concern for the long term.

Sure, the ruthlessness hasn’t changed, but...

1800s: let’s build rails everywhere

1900s: let’s build shops everywhere

2000s: let’s move everything by rails

PSR: let’s store cars and locomotives, close shops, sell rails, and only haul what’s convenient for us

The carman position is obsolete and wasteful. Was only a matter of time.
