IBM Is Cutting Almost 2,000 Jobs as It Reshapes the Business

IBM confirmed that a “small percentage of employees” who are not performing “at a competitive level”

would be leaving the company.

First time I've seen this statement mentioned in any of the news articles that reported on this RA. Nothing like a bald-faced lie to attempt to rationalize this action.

This would be an example of IBM management exhibiting the "Trust and personal responsibility in all relationships." value. Crooks.

@ZseT8Xy-1eot ,

IBM Cloud support falls under GTS and they are getting corn holed right now.

So where are the cuts? GTS again? Don't know anyone that got cut.

Ginny is the most non performer at IBM. Let her go and see your stock rise.

I was under performing. That is why you sent me to India to train my replacements..

@gqb If you read the last several weeks you'll notice IBM made non-US cuts first in Italy, Germany, France, Tel Aviv, Canada... No one is safe, this time around.

@fek In GTS, Cloud Services. Current group is spread across India and the US, but most are in India. Cuts were made only on the US side - no one from offshore affected. Work to be transitioned to the offshore team.

@ZseT8Xy-udf They always go after the Americans first as they have 0 entitlements where the EU is too expensive to layoff with all of their entitlements - you have to pay them for a year to do nothing while they accrue vacation time and other benefits.

@sek, can you tell us which group you were part of and your role was?

That bloomberg comment is as insulting as it is incorrect. Myself and the other people on my team who were let go this week were top performers, but probably among the more highly paid (due to seniority and being US-based).

I was told this was clearly a cost-cutting exercise and I don't doubt it. No one from our massive India team was affected, not even the lowest performing ones.

Based on the people I have seen let go, it has very little to do with performance and a lot to do with seniority and salary

This article is netting out the layoffs nicely

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ibm-layoffs-2019-12-things-163419866.html

Here are the observations

  1. 1700 layoffs. With 1 month severance and 6 months to one year of healthcare thrown in, the 500-700 million dollar charge announced by the CFO doesn’t add up. Look for more head count cuts to come

  2. IBM is moving to high value. GTS (infrastructure cloud, and TSS). You are in the bullseye. With the CFO announcing we are exiting OEM. If you work in OEM don’t be surprised. If you work in TPP (cognitive) or Application management (GBS) don’t be surprised if OEM realigns you too. If you work in HW (Especially storage or scale out Power) don’t be surprised if IBM vendors you. All of HW could be vendored if the right low cost manufacturer can be found.

  3. IBM has other plans outside of hiring to grow it’s business. (GTS this is code words for spinoff/merger)

  4. Redhat will bring 13k worth of new heads. Translation = 13k worth of legacy heads will be deemed redundant

So, you get kicked in the teeth with a layoff and get insulted again on the way out the door with the comment of not being "competitive"?

The biggest non performer is the executive team, why are they not being laid off. Ginni must leave who in IBM is the biggest non performer than her?

"And all 2k in the usa where headcount is not that high

Hence, this is a massive hit" .... I thought some were USA, some were Europe, etc.

That is clearly a lie when it comes to DPEs in Managed Applications. Their RA was role-based, not skill based.

". . .who are not performing “at a competitive level”. . ."

Really, really wish the name of the C-Suite lunkhead that uttered this quote was cited in the article.

Funny how everyone is rated top performers every year before they get laid off. You give your life to this company and they take yours at the end.
