Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

How safe are new hires?

Seems to me that the most vulnerable category of employees at Oracle are people who've been here the longest. I rarely see anybody talk about new hires being laid off. Does that mean that those of us who've joined in the last two years are (relatively) safe?

"They have a people staying/hiding out beyond their welcome problem."

Unfortunately this is true. I see bodies in the office everyday almost indistinguishable from the furniture.

Yes, i would say you're safer than someone who has camped out there for 5+ years.

Oracle does not have a ppl leaving problem.

They have a people staying/hiding out beyond their welcome problem.

No safe place at Oracle, period. This is a company in crisis,’cutting cost left and right to maintain EPS and keep up the share price. Buying back shares - $72 Billion during last 5 yrs - is the number 1 priority. Employees plain don’t matter. Nobody cars if you were just hired or an old timer. Spreadsheet rule. Don’t join!

"over 40 most of the time and hiring younger, cheaper people."

Constant misinformation. But it's a way for you to justify your own layoff?

Reality is the newer hires cost the same, if not more, than you.

Never are you safe at Oracle. Worked there over 5 years and every quarter there are layoffs and new hiring at the same time. They never care to match outgoing with incoming jobs. They are purging those over 40 most of the time and hiring younger, cheaper people.

Oracle laid off 60% of certain departments regardless of how long you have been with the company, whether you had a desirable skill set or not, whether you were expansive or not. No one is safe.

I have not seen a new hire have an issue in Austin, but roles can change.

yes, you are relatively safe. You have more modern, whether true or not, skillset. Your coworkers who have been there 10+ years don't.

BUt at the end of the day, you are not safe anywhere. That's why it's important to keep up your skillset and marketability. And stay moving! Don't hunker down anywhere for 10+ years.

@Ztw7qWf-cyr Very well said. Do not give it a sh--, just leave and go if it happens on you. However, if you are not well prepared and cannot pass interviews, that's your bad, don't blame anyone. The one who keep telling you you are safe and no need to prepare your interview skill-sets are either dumb or cheating you on propose.

Any employee at any company in the US is always at some amount of risk but stop worrying about it. Even the best can be let go if the company changes direction or the market dictates it. Control what you can control and let the rest go. If it happens be happy for the opportunity for a change. If I were let go, I would have a hard time finding another job simply because I'm tired of the b---s--- and I could lose my home and need to change my lifestyle greatly but people need to be prepared. If you are not, as I am not, that's a problem you need to fix so it's not such a concern. And I'm not saying don't care about your company or your work. Care about your company and your work and deliver your best but remember that sh-- happens. Be prepared, be resilient, be happy.

Nobody is safe. Nobody. You could be the best worker taking a well below market wage. But if they decide to eliminate an entire organization and you are in it, tough luck. It's a numbers and budgets game, that is all, providing you didn't cheese off the senior director or VP, then you could be gone even if you could pull gold bars out of the loo.

Typically the cheaper you are the safer you are. But it's easy to pull the plug on a whole org and flush everyone down the toilet than it is to fish out a couple cheap college grads. So new hires are safe if you are cheap. If you are a new hire earning more than 6 figures you should have a target painted on your back the instant you walk through the door. No experience and high salary shows up nicely on a layoff spreadsheet.

I have been seeing new hire (less than a year) and new NCG (more than 3+ years) got affected. As a matter of fact, the NCG got affected had much more output than the NCG was safe. So there might be mixed-rules for that. If you are so worried about your future, find another better place and stay.
