IAM...Blah. I worked for 18 yrs and suffered discrimination when I returned from the service after 9/11. Severe hostile workplace. I pleaded and begged for union representation and was told they did not have the resources to help me. According to my District Rep, viewed as a strong person and all their efforts where focused on those that couldn't help themselves. (was actually told that!) I ended with medical retirement. Therefore, according to my doctor, I couldn't help myself in the end. But, I guess I was lucky; I'm still getting paid for nothing.

And to those that argue no one is entitled to a job? Well, I digress a bit. The statement is true; however in practicality, this is not the case. When a person hires on, and is offered a job, many sacrifices are made to accept that job. And one thing is a mutual contract of trading effort for a paycheck. If the employee fails in their obligation, then negative consequences can follow. When all goes well, and the employee loses his/her job, then the employer neglected their end of the bargain. Simple solution that other jobs do (including the military)? 1. Offer early retirement; 2. HIRING FREEZE. Then no one is shafted and need to go through unneeded turmoil which is being fostered upon individuals, families, and communities. Goodness Gracious!

It actually hilarious of the back and forth bickering of the info wars. What management personnel mentioned who or how many were being laid off? NONE! Yet there's some who will claim they "heard" certain numbers at every locations. Guess what, no one is going to know until it happens. The Precision Shareholder Railroading benefits exec's exclusively. If any of you actually look at stock prices and trends, then you would most certainly have a better understanding of how business models work. A lot of companies are actually doing a version of "PSR" to reduce overhead. The GM plant closures are by far the best example. Folks, I'm not going to agree with either side, but you need to look at past corporate business trends. I've been railroading a long time, but this PSR scares me greatly. I was there when CP did it, and it ended very badly. A lot of lives were ruined because of it. Mark my words, when the stocks fall(and they will), there's going to be a massive shakedown at the corporate level. UP's rail infrastructure is one of the worst in some locations. Mr. Lance Fritz will have some explaining to do when the numbers fall. Anyone familiar with the apology tour conducted by the other class 1 CEO's? Let's stop bashing each other and their craft. You're obviously being affected by the same thing, so why bash each other? I have some very unfavorable opinions of the unions and what they actually do, but will it change the outcome by bashing them? Seriously doubt it. Its websites like this and other social media sites that need to be brought out into the open even further to increase the pressure on corporate America regarding business models. Stand together, not apart. God bless you all affected by PSR.

I read a story that FedEx basicly just did psr with Amazon. Turning down lower paying contracts to maximize profits on premium contracts. What happens when these companies loose these premium contracts. The stock holders dump their stock and it ranks I guess.

@vgf: Based on the content of your comment, it doesn't appear that you have studied relevant industry trends.

If you had studied industry trends, you would have looked at the P/E ratio, because it points to UP stock being overvalued, as does the actual value of UP assets that stood at $61.3B at the end of Q1 FY2019. If your compensation is tied to company stock, that should worry you, because the stock is obviously inflated. UP also has a larger than average number of (currently underfunded) liabilities, not to mention sizable unrelated debts that will eventually have to be serviced.

Also, you should stop telling people to "get educated" until after you've demonstrated the ability to properly construct a sentence.

just retired from UPRR, on the track side for 41 years. I was union local chairman in Seattle and Spokane. Around 2000 to 2004 I noticed a change with our union representatives and how management was trying to get a foothold. Advance or fast forward to 2014 and now the UPRR is having union representatives attend our meetings at work. Not sure, but seems likes management was getting cozy with the union representatives in the BMWED Teamsters for several years. Our Union will not strike anymore, and I asked a union official why that is. He told me most or the majority of Union Employees can not live without a paycheck.

There are other companies to work for. You worked for UP because it was a great paycheck, with benefits. Berate a company for trying to be efficient and competitive in the marketplace. If you don’t look at trends in industries then you’re just mad because you are dumb. There are other companies moving the same amount of freight with 11000 less employees. Get educated, or get a new career.

Lol...... our union is so strong they expect us to take the D, work harder, and get nothing in return. F-that......

Quit being friends with the bosses. They are your enemy, not your friend. Show them by getting them laid off. And F vena
