A paragraph from Senator Harkin's floor comments in a 2010 Senate Hearing. Visit Senator Harkin's website to see full comments.

"The University of Phoenix started the school year in 2008 with 443,000 students. They ended

the school year with 470,800, a growth of 27,800 students. How did they get 27,800? They

recruited 371,700 students just to get that 27,800. That means almost 350,000 students passed

through the University of Phoenix in 2009 without anything to show for it. They came in. A lot

of them gave them their Pell grants. They turned over their student loans. Then they vanished.

The students got the debt and the University of Phoenix got a nice little profit. Actually, a nice

big profit."

I do not know how people that work at this company are able to sleep at night.

Everyday this company enrolls students that are clearly not prepared for school. These students are left with incredible debt and nothing to show for it. I would rather work an honest job for $8 an hour than make $50,000 a year destroying peoples lives. I have read reports that this company hires a great deal of Mormons, but thats hard to believe. I know many Mormons and they would never work for a company that requires such a lapse in moral and ethical judgement.

Congratulations to those who have been laid off! You may not have an income, but at least you have your soul back. Go out and do something that you can be proud of!
