Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

The numbers don't support the contention that "Heald is strong". One can look at the federally mandated disclosures to make your own determination if Heald is doing well. To say that Heald counselors have not been laid off may or may not be technically accurate. Those Heald counselors, admissions, staff people having been "laid off due to the lack of production" may disagree with you. Noting that this is a "layoff site" the most relevant number is Heald's enrollment. The fact of the matter is that Heald's enrollment is suffering from the loss of Cal Grants. Those numbers won't show up until the October 2012 enrollments. With regards to employment of recent Heald graduates along with noting that the graduation rate is approximately 30% to 40% depending on the campus, then most Heald students apparently are extremely dissatisfied assuming that any of the reviews on the yelp dot com website have any merit. While it is true that the Heald NAME is 150 years old, Heald is really ONLY 2 years old dating it from the January 2010 acquisition by CCI. A graduation ceremony doesn't say anything of significance. What is significant is the graduation rate, tuition costs, amount of student loan debt, employment outcomes, etc. That information is somewhat available but will become much more accessible after January 1, 2013 when California has a dedicated website for prospective students to evaluate BEFORE attending college. Realistically, Heald with a $20K cost can't compete against a CC with a $2K cost. The CC AA degree will transfer all the credits to the CSU or UC system with most of the Heald AA degree not being transferable. Also and to a large extent NOT Heald's fault is that an AA degree is no longer an appropriate credential. Most paralegals recruited straight out of college by Northern California lawfirms are either JDs, BS degree holders heading off to law school or those with BS degrees. Spending $20K+ for a Heald AA degree in paralegal most likely won't get you a job. Making matters worse is that paralegal starting salaries are likely to be under $20 an hour. Even worse are those graduating into the "booming medical billing and coding field" that can't find ANY work.
