places that are bad places to work invest heavily into 'best places to work' "contests" - they know they suck and they try to repair the image - they will do anything to make the list and they on purpose start internal initiatives that will yield points in the ranking (even though they know most employees do not take advantage of them or are simply 'dead on arrival') - most of the companies that are on a typical 'best place to work' list are quite oposite indeed, and one should interpret this list as a 'best place to avoid' - several years ago i used to work for a consulting company that required 90% travel, needless to say, women were scarce over there as it's difficult to nurse a baby and be 3000 miles away 5 days a week... the company consistently ranked as a 'top place for working mothers' as they sprung up gazillion initiatives to help working mothers (none of them worked as the business model revolved around travel)... check one list out here (it's filled with audit and consulting firms, most of them require face time with clients across the country - http://workingmoms.about.com/od/yourcareer/p/WMBestCompanies.htm)... my two cents - just ignore the rankings...
