Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

To Camden Kid,

I’m not sure an investigation into illegal student lending practices will include UoP since, to my knowledge, UoP does not loan money to students. I think the investigation you mentioned may be aimed more towards schools that direct their students to borrow money from certain private education lenders. In some cases, those schools get a kickback for every student they direct to a certain lender. I thought this practice was abandoned years ago when the Clinton Administration began investigating private student loan lenders. I believe Sallie Mae and many others came under heavy scrutiny for charging high interest rates on student loans, failing to disclose those interest rates, APRs, and Origination Fees charged to the student as well as giving huge under-the-table kickbacks to schools that listed or presented certain lenders as a “preferred lender.” There are schools that loan money to their students so those schools may be part of the investigation but I don’t think that will be the case for UoP.
