Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

Heald college converting job applicants to students.

A new business scam created by this for profit college. They apparently are short on business and have to recruit their job applicants to become students. I am going to tell my story so no one else has to waste their time and resources including car and gas to show up for this scam. I have a graduate degree and applied to teach a course at the Heald college in Hayward. A few days after I submitted my application I received an email inviting me for an interview. I showed up at their location in Hayward at 6:30pm and saw a group of 20 to 30 people applying for different jobs waiting for a "group" interview. Of course I was confused and puzzled about what a group interview exactly meant. We were all taken for a tour of this very small and uninteresting supposedly "college". We were then lead into a class room for a sales pitch for Heald college from the president Douglas Den Hartog. This guy started lecturing us on how wonderful Heald college is and what type of program they offer for 1 hour! He then dismissed us (the class!) and told us to take a 5 minute break. He stated that if we were still interested in working for Heald we could stay after his long and boring sales pitch and tell everyone in the group a little about ourselves!!! I was shocked. I asked president Hartog about the misleading invitation to an interview and asked him if we were actually going to be interviewed for the job that we have applied for. He pompously told me that up to 500 people apply for jobs at Heald so I guess that gives them the right to waste our time, use us as captive audience to sell their program and maybe even get a few of us unemployed/job seekers to sign up for their programs. What a scheme! A very unprofessional and dishonest business indeed.

Just like all the others--it's the way CCi operates.

At 8576... The subject of my replies has to do with the bs interview written. I never said I worked admissions. I was a teacher a DOE and a campus President. My point In bringing up Parthenon was in response to someone else. And yeah you probably do know me IF you've been around awhile,,,so what.

At 8581...apparently YOU are the clueless one.

What? A Campus President without a clue? Inconceivable.

STFU...perhaps we've met. I've been to Parthenon multiple time myself so big whoop. I'm still not sure how you can speak on recruitment when you've never done it. I can tell you most CP's don't have a clue. Mine doesn't that's for sure.

There will be no new "multiple Parthenon winners" produced this year.

At 8585, I never said I was in admissions . I started as a teacher and eventually became a president and a mutiple Parthenon winner.. I find this board entertaining, funny, and pathetic all at once. And I will continue to be entertained by it as I please. Hash tags really? What are you 19...

@STFU (<--cute) It's apparent you did not survive ADMISSIONS for 23 years so please don't tell me how we recruit. It's also obvious you were not in career services. Student Finance? DOFI? Education? Really doesn't matter to me...I am curious though WTF you're doing trolling this board and you've been gone for 2 years?! #getyalife #dontlookback #spreadyourwings #flyaway

AT 8515. I worked for this company for 23 years I know exactly how THiS company works. I was there when it was good and when it went to shit after Peter Waller left...I left 2 years ago, couldn't stand to be associated with what it is now. As far as the person being degreed that is neither here nor there. I had plenty of degreed students who couldn't find jobs,,and they got sucked into believing a career change was a good idea at Everest. So don't tell me what I know and don't know!, I've seen it all at that shit hole of a company.

The original message can be summarized as, "I've never been to a group interview, so telling me about the operation in front of others is really trying to sell me. And asking me to tell a bit about myself in front of the other candidates is out of the question."

Yes, this was obviously a scam. CCI is desperate for students and they'll do anything to meet their quotas; the embarrassingly bad quality of many of the students is evidence of their desperation.

The morons running this school need to repair Heald'd reputation and settle the lawsuits pending against them. Insulting job candidates and wasting time trying to recruit people who are never going to enroll is pathetic. Instead of fixing the problems CCI just continues to make things worse and worse. CCI deserves to have their accreditation stripped and their stock delisted.

8509 writes, "If I'm hiring, jump through my hoops if you're hungry. If not I have 499 others who are." YES! This is the CCi way! If you are hungry enough, we can get you to say yes, no matter if it's legal.

MMS... Please don't take offense but have you ever heard of CareerBuilder, Monster, Indeed, Beyond, TheLadders, etc? MMS do you have any idea just how many people are unemployed right now? The original poster said the group interview was for multiple positions. Imagine if there was an opening in every department, which I would imagine they are experiencing very high turnover right now in CA with all that is going on. Imagine the receptionist position, Student Finance, Admissions, Education, Career Services all with openings. For every employee ready to run for the hills or scared to death of that long walk to the Campus President's office, I am sure there are easily 100 people sick and tired of making an unemployment check stretch. Now, I totally agree that they should have been upfront that this was a group interview but what can you do? Anyway, best of wishes to anyone out there searching for a job right now. It's hard out there!!!! Anyway guys, take a deep breath...now, let it out!!!! :)

@mms...idiots?? No need to name call. Clearly you don't have a clue about how CCI operates. This person is already degreed. This person is not the ideal candidate for any of the programs because of their financial aid eligibility (if we are keeping it real that CCI is all about $$$$)...Likely the rest of the candidates would be in a similar situation. Also, this is exactly what a group interview looks like. See below. Thank you!

http://www.best-job-interview.com/group-interviews.html

What to Expect in Group Interviews

Group interviews involve getting together with other job candidates to meet with one or more interviewers. An increasing number of companies use this type of interview to screen out unsuitable job applicants and it is important to know what to expect.

Usually this interview involves a number of interviewers - potential managers or supervisors, human resources, even future co-workers - and a group of candidates all together in one room. This type of interview can take a number of different forms.

Some people are just too dang smart for their own good.

All of you are idiots. This person was mislead. This is NOT how a group interview works either. This person is correct it IS a scam to get some of them to enroll. I don't believe for one minute 500 people applied either that's a bunch of horse shit. This is clearly an admissions scam seen it done many times. It was deceitful , misleading, and manipulative. I would venture to bet that the replies above were written by the idiots at the corporate office. I smell BB all over them. To the person who thought you were interviewing. TRUST me you DO NOT want to work for this company. As you can see from the posts on this page,,this IS NOT and educational institution don't be fooled and run in the other direction....FAST

Lol. This is the problem now. Job applicants think getting a job is on their terms. If I'm hiring, jump through my hoops if you're hungry. If not I have 499 others who are. Goes for those with doctorates and those with diplomas.

The last time I was in the market for a job this was not common practice so NO I haven't ever had this experience myself. I have seen many done this way as management is building their 'bench'. I'm sure as an applicant it was very discouraging to be herded in for a group presentation. I'm certain many of us will learn all too soon how it feels. My issue is with you claiming this was deceptive student recruitment when it was not.

I can see why Anonymous8499 needs a job. People with such negative attitudes shouldn't be hired for any job, much less teaching, and employers have lots of ways to find out in advance what type of personality an applicant has. So Heald ticked Anonymous8499 off in only an hour. Can you imagine what a problem he or she would have been if actually hired to teach? Patience is the #1 attribute required for success.

That process isn't really all that unusual. It may not be the best idea, but it isn't a scam.

Usually a group interview consist of one job applicant and 4 or 5 interviewers depending on the department and position of the job. Not sure why 8502 is being defensive, but he/she have obviously not been on a group interview.

8499, your story is very interesting and a different tactic for sure. Have you complained to anyone about this?

that's how group interviews work. You misunderstood. They do get a lot of applicants. He was just explaining what we do. If at that point you still want to continue the process... Well, like he said, stick around.
