Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

Anyone have some credible insight on what merits constituted management being eligible for bonus pay in 2013 when it was obvious that their tenured staff was being axed left and right, the great Parthenon party being cancelled, no more yearly merit raises for the grunt workers, insurance coverage being more heavily carried by the employee, student enrollment obviously down, employee satisfaction obviously down, and you can read the rest of the mess if you go back page after page here. According to the business dictionary - www.businessdictionary.com/definition/bonus.htm - It's Gratuity given as gift, or compensation earned as reward upon achieving a goal. So CCI could "gift" thousands to the upper echelon for no reason and not blink at denying a few cents raise to those people who actually keep this company running? But if it was a reward for achieving a goal, what goal? Was it for showing up during these times of distress, because many more are doing that and still staying hopeful. They are smiling and dialing, smiling and dialing from what I read here. Was it because they smiled while they severed half their staff. Who here was axed and felt that their supervisor felt pained over it? Is this what their Bonus paid them for? To smile and cut, not smile and dial? Perfectly legal as far as corporate business I am sure, a payoff for following their dictates. Not unlike the Mafia is you wish to compare it. "Get ride of Jimmy...he's become a burden to us...we will make it worth you while." But seriously, how were these bonuses earned? And if they were simply a gift, was it the proper time for extravagant gifts when so many were losing their livelihoods?

Who cares? Welcome to corporate America! Those in charge make money. The bigger the company, the higher the bonuses and pay. They probably earned it based on revenue, like most companies. But who cares now? It's over. They got them. They'll get them at their next high paying job. It is what it is.

I think it is in really bad taste that anyone feels they deserve a bonus or a raise for screwing over people's futures.

Well at least I didn't tell them to kill themselves. Why don't they call HR to find out or those things are confidential. The other bonuses are approved by the board after certain benchmarks are achieved and I believe those are published for everyone to read. Why does it really matter? You are either the bug or the windshield.

Thank you. I think this is a fair question. Employees were told in 2012 that they would continue to be tested and evaluated throughout 2013 but would NOT be offered any type of merit award even if they scored 100% on everything because the company was in such dire straits. Rather than use the results of the scores to identify employees who may have needed additional training as was it's original intention, they have indicated that it would now be used as a reason for dismissal. So, during that same time, the company obviously had set aside funds to be distributed to management for bonuses. Employees were denied their ability to "earn" their well earned reward. So, gifted or "earned"...it all appears a bit distasteful to hear there were bountiful funds handed out in such a time of hardship to everyone else on board this mess of a sinking ship.
