Every employee should refuse this voluntary time off and continue as business as usual. By taking time off we allow this company to keep on going with their immoral (and possibly illegal) actions. REPEAT: Refuse to comply and be defiant from this point forth!!

23909 - Good point about the teach-out severance. However, I suspect that those deals are far from iron -clad, and that CCI has built in provisions that prevent them from paying under a wide variety of circumstances (bankruptcy, rapidly declining enrollment forcing early closure, etc). How much do you trust exec management? Do you reallly count on them to do right by the employees? Employees are unsecured creditors and will have to stand toward the end of a long line to get paid if CCI decides to not honor the severance deals. Also, were ALL employees at teach-outs offered severance. It would be interesting to have someone from a teach-out post what they received in writing.
23904, employees at teach outs were offered severance. So, it is possible. But if you don't have severance or unemployment, that is zero income. I also agree to start looking now. But you could do it and work. Some people might be in a position to take time off to interview. I myself saw the writing on the wall. The day after they announced this nonsense, I started applying. I did not want to be competing with 12,000 people for a job. This particular job closed last week, so nobody currently looking will get it.
I think if people stay, we are past the whole immoral anger stance, aren't we?
23895 - I can't imagine that anyone is going to get a severance package (beyond earned payroll) at this point. You are right about unemployement, although I have seen scearios where unemployement was paid to someone who quit to leave an extremely poor work environment. This might qualify......In any event, staying on to collect unemployment may be a bit short-sighted, if it means you delay your job search and end-up competing with everyone else who adopts the same strategy. There are jobs out there - but you have to go after them. Now.
23893, you can incite people to quit, but that scenario is most unlikely. If you quit you can't collect unemployment or won't get a severance package. People aren't just going to up and quit.

New buyer has no incentive to keep staff from CCI...none. That's why they will blow it up and start fresh. If they buy a campus, they will get it for pennies..which is more than enough flexibility to clean house and start over. ED will havE no issues with it either.
The OP might have posted this to get people to actually listen, while watching those who refuse to take time off lose their jobs.

Yeah, word is coming out in dribs and drabs. An e-mail will make it look all nice and pretty, but as an earlier poster stated, it is a DIRE, DIRE, situation. The question that I have is, if they keep cutting costs to stay afloat, and a new buyer IS secured. What is the motivation for said new owner to suddenly INCREASE costs? I believe that the new owner would do just the opposite and see how they can reduce costs even further to recoup whatever that initial outlay of capital would be.
23868, you are correct. What options do they have? Most schools have reported dismal starts. Money is simply not coming in. Quite frankly, the transition of keeping full-time faculty and not replacing them all with adjuncts is a smart but financially risky move. Adjuncts are far more affordable. I think CCi wants to keep the accredit ors as happy as possible through this which means they have not thrown in the towel on a sale. It would be much easier and have much more cost savings if they just let go of f/t faculty and kept the adjuncts. A sale under any circumstance is complicated. This one infinitely more so due to creditor risk, different accreditation and state agencies to deal with, etc. 10% for 10 weeks is painful to all impacted, but better that than another 50-100 RIF's.

First of all, it's not illegal. These things happen when businesses are going under. But, if everyone refuses to take time off, exactly what do you think the end result of that will be? Pizza parties and free buffet lunches? No. Layoffs. The Titanic is sinking people! You won't save your job by taking a stance. The company cannot afford to keep paying us all. Save your jobs and do what they ask. Or not. But look around you. Not everyone will be there if they can't save money. They would not be doing this if it weren't a dire, dire situation.
