Government has a place in higher education, but our government policy towards it has only led to higher costs and lower quality. Instead of creating a financial aid system designed on both paying for school AND making school affordable, the federal government simply decided to just provide copius amounts of tax payer money and let institutions run wild. The concept of for profit education is a good concept, but the financial aid system is designed to provide mass ineficeny and fraud that it borders on the extremely dangerous. Investment in education is good...if the investments shows a return. Right now, I think that return in government dollars and debt is not providing our society with a acceptable return. The bottom line is schools have simply priced tuition to the max title iv a student can get, making paying back loans a real burden, and finally sparking the debate of affordability and value. A severe and long overdue correction is ahead for higher education in both private and public sectors. It is simply too expensive even at cheaper state universities. Liberals are attacking the abuses of the for profits, conservatives are attacking the tuition hikes of state schools..both are valid. However, the only thing that will fix the problem long term is to reduce the amount of title iv monies available. Cutting the funds wil force universities and colleges to reevaluate their operational plan and cut the large amount of fat in their administrative and other excessive items in their budgets. Many universities will have to go through a severe structural change, but it is the only way to fix the problem. Schools can't just jam students and taxpayers at will like they have done for the last 30 years, we crossed the line of reasonable already.

24620, I agree that a true libertarian would say that individuals, not the government, should pay for a their education. After working at Everest for 5 years, the libertarian position is seeming more and more attractive.

It's funny when you hear the libertarian types yell "There shouldn't be any rules or regulations! Government is too big! Let the market sort itself out!" when it comes to career colleges. CCi gets just under 90% of its revenues from taxpayers directly through financial aid. There's more that comes from us through veteran's educational benefits. A TRUE libertarian would be saying "Get your hands out of my pocket and let these people pay for their own damn education!" Funny, though, how they can twist the basic concepts to suit whatever benefits them the most. HUH-larious!

It is funny how uncle sam screwed with me for my mortgage loan a decade ago when everything melted. Seems like now they are screwing with education. They need to step off!

"I be a Everest grad...BITCH! What you doin' bein' all lazy and shit? You can be a Everest grad too, yo! Just call! Ain't NUTHIN' else you gotta do to get yo degree!" No wonder they never attend class or do assignments. They called...they were basically promised a degree for doing that.

Why am I not surprised that this is from Forbes? And seriously, do you really expect people to feel sorry for the housing lenders or for-profit schools? Are you really going to be an apologist for them? Well, mislead all you want, the majority of Americans wanted those bankers put in prison (duh, it sparked the Tea Party) and are starting to feel the same way about for-profit education. We've run our "hood" ads non-stop for years in almost every market. Americans know we are not a real college! I mean, come ON!
