Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

Is the monitor doing anything?

I was hoping that the monitor would take steps to stop the unethical behavior in CCi. Does anyone know if the monitor has required any changes concerning any of the unethical practices?

  1. Fitzgerald is not there to investigate. He is there to provide credibility that the DOE is ensuring CCI is adhering strictly to the MOU. For Skaden Arps, his firm, this gives them good PR and a lot of money in billable hours. That is all.

I seriously doubt anyone's going to jail. It's far more likely that they all win prizes - sign on bonuses to another high paying job. Either way, will it matter? Non management employees and students will always be the losers in this mess. At this point, I have zero faith that anything good will happen. Leadership sucks, but they will all get away with any crimes because they have friends in high aces. The only possible criminal action will be at the campus level. They may need a few fall guys to appease those screaming for Justice. Fitzgerald is probably friends with half of DOE and half of the board. Nothing good comes of this.

25538 - I agree. Fitzpatrick's not someone you appoint unless you're very serious. He's not just "monitoring." He's collecting evidence of actual fraud so that jail terms can be on the table. CCi execs really pushed too hard this time. There's only so many times you can give the finger to those in charge.

Fitzpatrick goes from prosecuting Scooter Libby, corrupt governors, and terrorists to be appointed by the Dept of Ed to be a do-nothing monitor - all that at the decrepit age of 54. How's that for a career trajectory? Or maybe there's more to it than #85 wants to believe.

I heard he is going from campus to campus, collecting boxes of toner. He needs to monitor who receives then.

Anonymous25485 is exactly right. The monitor is there to justify the "draw down" on the 21 day delay. HCM1 compliance is achieved by a monitor with fewer than the standard 21 day delay. He wasn't hired to check your vacation hours, rate of pay, or any of that.

So he isn't really doing anything, then?

It's my understanding he approved the paycut and toner restrictions. So, there is that.

The monitor is just that: a monitor. He is there to monitor CCi's compliance with certain conditions imposed by ED. He's an attorney, not a federal agent, and if you're expecting him to be some sort of investigator looking under any and all rocks for fraud you've got the wrong expectations for what his role is.
