Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

I mean, you can't keep asses in classes if you punish people for plagiarizing, right?

Heald faculty and students use TurnItIn to check for plagiarism. Is this important software not available for Everest?

I've been FTF here for 4 years. I really hate to say this, but if I was in the business community I would never consider hiring a CCi grad. I've had good students, but the risk would be too great of getting a bad one. They are capable of lying through their teeth to get what they want, but too lazy to work and too brain dead to learn. The attitudes that they exhibit and get away with do not belong in any functioning organization.

"We are instructed to basically view them as infants who have no idea what right and wrong is." YES. That's what is so frustrating!

26560- APA and plagiarism is covered, but just because it's covered doesn't mean students read, listen, or follow the rules. They don't. Like another poster, I have reported COUNTLESS instances of blatant plagiarism, only to be told to "Give the student another chance." I realize CCI has done a lot of reprehensible things, but Academic Integrity is something that REAL institutions take very seriously, and hold serious consequences for. Like failing an assignment in the first instance, failing a course in the 2nd instance, or being removed from school on the third. And at traditional schools, these are on your permanent record FOREVER. CCI has no such policy. Students can literally plagiarize 3-4 times a term without consequence. I submitted a form awhile back because a student had plagiarized 3 assignments in a row, and would not respond to my contacts. I was told by the advisor that "since the offenses happened in such a short period of time, let's just call them one offense."

Anonymous26562: and we all know that. The problem is that we are not permitted to penalize them, at least not in any meaningful way. WE know that the students know that cutting and pasting is plagiarism. We are instructed to basically view them as infants who have no idea what right and wrong is. In a college with more normal standards, there would be severe enough penalties that the student would be unlikely to do that again.

If a students is told copy and paste is ok, they never took a composition class. They cover APA extensively. If a student chooses not to do the work, it's on them.

On 2 occasions I filled out the paperwork to have students removed from my class for cutting and pasting. In both cases I was told by the reporting person it was forwarded for review. I requested in both cases to have the student removed from my class. They were not and ai never heard anything again. Both students failed the class.

26552, whoever told you that is a liar. It's covered extensively in Comp I and Comp II.

That is the underlying premise, whether admins admit to it or not. The plagiarism policy asks instructors to forgive egregious, blatant, outright plagiarism the first, second, third time, and so on, and only take off a percentage of points. We are also not allowed to research whether or not the student has plagiarized in previous classes. Oh, and here's the kicker, we are urged not to use the term plagiarism, instead, we are encouraged to use "unoriginal work," because "plagiarism sounds too negative." That is a direct quote. I am NOT making this stuff up. This is for ECPO, I can't speak for other divisions.

Yeah, I've been told that students don't understand what plagiarism is and somehow think that cutting and pasting from the web is the same thing as writing a paper. It's BS, but I go with the flow. At this point it's whatever it takes to keep my job.

I can only speak from my own experience (adjunct). Everest is the only college I've worked for, out of five, that tolerates plagiarism. I have encountered it many times, but there has never been a consequence for the student. It is always "inadvertent" (apparently because our students are mentally challenged). The most I can do is ask them to add a cite.

Plagiarism at a Everest, as at most colleges and universities, has a series of dealing with plagiarism. It depends on the type and depth. But it doesn't mean automatic removal from a school.
