Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

Have the Courage

Everest Librarian Laurie McConnell did the right thing, by reporting on the abuses at her school. And now her story is being told in the US Senate. How many people at EDMC (and Argosy University, The Art Institutes, Brown Mackie College and South University)are willing to do the same thing? Who has the values and the courage to resist predatory behavior by their employer?...http://politicalnews.me/?id=29082

To Anonymous15098, what kind of answer is that? Do you honestly believe that every person who has a moral or ethical problem with the company (any company) is simply a disgruntled employee? If so then I say you are an idiot. You have to be an upper level administrator who has some input into the decisions (or at least the chance to state your opinion) or you'd actually see that you're not safe in the company either. I am an exec in the company and say that anyone is foolish to say that it's a bad employee who speaks their mind. There is a policy that states that you are supposed to speak up actually. Now I understaffed how it all works, the policy is in place for compliance and to make a good argument in the event someone questions something along the line. We can say, "Look, we have a policy". Yay for us. The truth is there are people like you who point a finger if you don't like the message. Admissions is held to a strict directive every day...meet your run rate, get your people in class, get someone enrolled, etc. Academics is told to pass everyone "no matter what" because we can't afford the drops. It is detrimental to our persistence. Instructors who are too hard are told to "dumb it down" so the "student" will stop complaining and not quit. I use the term student loosely since on paper that's what they are called, in reality they are just paying customers that we keep until the last penny is obtained. Ironically we don't let them back in from a re admissions standpoint becasue they don't have a dollar to give us. Here for the "student"? I think not. Then career services is supposed to help these unprepared "grads" find gainful employment. You know who determines the real quality of these people? The employers who interview or take a chance on them. Only then do they realize the person is not what the golden resume says they are.

In summary, you are an idiot. This business model must change before this company will ever be successful again. The top people (like you it seems) should worry about doing what's right for the "student" and for the employers who consider hiring them instead of worrying about investor satisfaction. Money may drive you but it also cause people to take shortcuts to get it. Sounds like EDMC.

I will say this.. They are not just "disgruntled, lazy employees". None of us are happy. We are treated like pieces of crap day in and day out. It doesn't matter if you are hitting your numbers, they want more, and they will treat you like shit every day.. it doesn't matter. They treat their employees horribly. And most of us feel like shit for what we do. We con people into going to school. People who can't afford it, people who shouldn't be in school. But we do it because we get chewed out if we don't. I WISH I could be a whistleblower.. but I am so far in student debt, I need to keep my job. You want to know why I took the job? They make you think that you are ACTUALLY helping people who want your help. You don't actually realize the horrible things you are doing until you are out of training and in the thick of things. I would leave in a heartbeat if I had another way to pay the bills. Even the managers hate their jobs.. I've heard them vocalize it. Get over yourself. You are screwing innocent people over too. Maybe some of us just have a higher moral compass.

Most of these "whistleblowers" are disgruntled employees who could not do their job right, they were lazy, want a hand-out (entitlement)or just negative people. No, I am NOT talking about the unfortunate who were just laid off, (thoughts & prayers go out to them and their families) I am talking about the "whistleblowers". There is no conspiracy theory. If you hated working at EDMC then why did you stay? Why did you even start working here? Some of them will say, I just needed a job, well it is still a choice YOU made. We all have CHOICES! So you affiliate yourself with this company then turn-around and bash them, (what does that say about you?) If you were part of some unethical practice what did you do about it while you were here? Did you just wait until you were laid off or start looking for a job after a few years then started complaining? EDMC is a good company. They employed you and instead of being grateful for an opportunity and doing everything you could to help students while you were here, you choose to start complaining now and pretend you are performing a selfless act. No, I don't work in HR, I am not a leader at EDMC, I am a low-mid level employee who knows we all have choices, if EDMC was not right for you then move on and find something that does work for you. Let it go.

Well when you have Wall Street connections, several business units and a non profit being housed under the same roof and 90% of the income from the Feds it is ripe for both to be going on. I can only hope the FBI is in the wings looking at the trail of money and monitoring bank accounts.

There's a difference between illegal and unethical. There's not anything in the trenches that is illegal going on, but unethical? Yes.

There's a new whistleblower policy people have to sign off on by either the 30th or 7/7, I don't remember. It makes it very hard for anyone to bad mouth the company legally.

I imagine a lot want to but they are living pay-check to pay-check and do not have a lot of options. Hopefully some of these 80 people who just got cut will speak up now that they are in the unemployment line already. I hope some were alert and maybe emailed documents to their home computers of any illegal activity that they may have seen before yesterday. I would expect some had heads up.
