Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

nteresting message that Democrats should read copied from insidehighered

I hire Everest graduates from their healthcare programs; MIBC and MA. They are required by their accreditation to have 70% of their graduates working in the field they studied. If they don't meet that requirement they are at risk of losing the program and accreditation. NO non profit or state school is required to do that. Fact: ALL colleges are for profit. This is a political game that will cause 10,000 more hard working, employed Americans to be unemployed and unable to repay their college loans or pay their bills. It is not beneficial to the students or the staff at the colleges. The career services staff I work with are professional and always asking what they can do to meet the needs of employers that are hiring graduates. I attend a Program Advisory Meeting twice annually so I can invest my opinion in the quality of education and training the students receive. This is in Oregon so I don't know how it is in other states. I hire Everest graduates and host them in an externship program where I am able to give them hands on training and also decide if I want to hire them on afterward, if we have the budget. They are trained and prepared to work in their field, especially after leaving my clinic upon completing their externship. That's why I hire them. The DOE suing the school is a detriment to our community and the students that come out of vocational programs. They need to sue state colleges also because from what I've heard, they have zero requirements to help graduates find gainful employment

For those that do not understand ... community colleges are subsidized via tax dollars and grants. Therefore, the student costs are lower -- upfront. When you compare apples to apples -- the cost between for profit and community college are equivalent.

The difference being ... at the for profit the student carries the burden and is positioned to repay on the investment. The community college lens ... all taxpayers incur the cost and their is minimal repayment on the investment.

Anonymous 15738 That is what you think. Does anyone in this country own up to it own actions??? You make the decision to go to college, You pick your program, And you graduate. Then you depend on career services to find you a job??? How about you find a job in this fake economy where most new positions only pay 8-9 per hour. Then I hear this man enrolled who has a 3rd grade reading level, so now an open enrollment college can tell the disable to kick rocks, HA HA then CCI would be investigated for turning away the disabled, Here is another one young lady comes in she is in a wheelchair she wants to be an FBI agent, So she wants to be in Criminal Justice program tell me what do you tell her??? The truth and be sued for not enrolling. Come on people need to stop being victims and look to the government to bulldoze their way through companies that provide an alternative for people who really want to change their current situation. Everyone knows that CCI is more expensive, If you do not want to pay go to your community college at no time was anyone locked in a room and told enroll or die, So I guess the moral of the story according to Mr. Durbin is to tell disabled people you are to dumb to make any decisions, It is not the fault of the public (GOVERNMENT RAN) High school that gave them those diplomas in the first place, Tell a lady who is 70 years old who says her dream is to get her masters before she dies that she can not enroll. I am not management nor a director I am a soldier who deals with students one on one everyday CCI has been telling us do everything by the book they have been training the entire staff to focus on students, Yes there are some whom feel that they have not been able to land their Dream job. All I am saying is how can we place people and be responsible for their actions after they graduate. Grow up people and be responsible for your own actions..

You keep using that word, disparagement. I do not think it means what you think it means.

The disparagement between for profit and community colleges is not that community colleges do not find their graduates jobs-----it is that for profit colleges like CCI assure high paying jobs while charging more than 10x more in tuition. The glamorous high paying careers do not materialize and students are left with significant debt while someone else in the school prospers.

The cci location i work for finds great jobs for above 70%of our students for each program. Some of my grads are working in their field and get paid more than me. I know because i work in career services. Its possible if you work hard and actually do your job. Coach the student that needs it most from day 1 so you can easily place them later. Lazy ass employees that didnt do their jobs right is what gave everyone a bad name. I have helped many and changed many lives.

If you hired 70% of the grads, there would be no problem. Unfortunately you likely get the top 10% and ignore the other 90%.
