Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

Caring about the students? Caring about yourself is more correct.

So I've been reading this site since I quit Everest Tempe and realized something. All it seems like is most of you really only care about yourselves. Petitions going around to save employees jobs, keeps CCI open because of the amount of people that would lose their jobs and benefits. Then having a small section that talks about what the students would be out. First off I think that most of these petitions are really showing the true colors of CCI's employees. "ME FIRST" I mean, I'm sad to think about my friends that could be out of a job, friends that are single parents, but what about the students. As well all already know, most of the students were not college ready when they were enrolled. If we didn't enroll them we, the employees, got in trouble. So we pushed them through. Did I like it? NO. Did I do it? Yes. I have a family to support. I was there through the September and February layoffs and felt that they weren't going to impact me. The May layoff was much different. As soon as we were told who was laid off and what departments I had enough. I had a job offer 2 days after that layoff and never went back. I've had time to think about how the students were treated, promises that we all made that we knew we were never going to be able to meet. Now I'm reading about saving the employees. First off the students put their trust in us and we failed, we lied, and we kept on doing it. With CCI facing closure there are thousands of students that will be in even more student loan debt with no degree to show for it. I know, you will be saying "but they only wanted their stipend". In some cases this was true, as it is for many other schools. However we did have students that succeeded and were on the path to graduate. What happens to them. Did CCI just force thousands of students, who doubted themselves in the first place, just take huge steps back and lose their trust in a school that promised so much. Yeah, it did. These are students who had been told they couldn't do it, we told them they could. Now the DOE and the news is telling them we lied. How would you feel if this happened to you and you faced the same challenges these students do? This is the reality of what is really happening at CCI. I believe that most people on this board want to rant and complain about themselves and what will happen to them. Here's what, quit complaining, start looking for another job. You have that choice, most of the students do not. Start thinking about students before you start begging the DOE to reconsider closing CCI. Personally I feel closing the school is a bad idea, starting over with new management and re-training employees about what it means to work with students would be a start. It isn't like this problem is going to go away. California will not be providing VA benefits for students that choose CCI, delays on Title IV funding, ongoing investigations. It would be nice to see everyone that claims they care about the students stand up for them, stop enrolling them, contact your students and tell them what's really going on. Help them. If you do that will you lose your job? Yeah, but guess what, you're going to lose it anyway. Go out feeling like you, for once, helped the student.

The biggest problem in trying to 'help' students with this situation - very difficult to convince many of them to continue. If they drop out, they are not eligible for loan forgiveness (which only applies to federal not private loans). Difficult to find a lender who will give a 'gap' loan to replace VA funds.

Maybe the anger is from feeling powerless. I was only doing my job." Really? That line has never kept anyone out of jail. It's not a free pass to anywhere.

Most of the for-profits are struggling because there was no extra money in job placement or b/c of their other questionable practices - which makes them less attractive as employers & perhaps less interested in hiring.

The employees who are so scared of losing their jobs are the ones who know full well they can't go anywhere but another for-profit... admissions, financial aid. Advisors and properly credentialed instructors might be OK, but the higher-ed frauds that most proprietary schools hire don't have a chance at real schools.

Thank You! Of all the crap I have been reading on this board, yours was the most heartfelt and really hit home with me. I agree, everyone is worried about their own skins, but what about the students, they were the ones that were lied to and are the ones that are going to suffer. The have been mere pawns in this game of chess, they were duped from the get go. It's all about greed and money $$$$. What makes me really sick to my stomach is how the company is playing a game of smoke and mirrors, and we're supposed to keep enrolling like nothing has happened. I hope they file bankruptcy next week and this sad state of affairs comes to an end.

Hey, there's baggage and then there's owning the luggage store. You can get down off the cross now - cuz it's just been sold.

Thank you for all the negative comments. You all just reinforced the true spirit of CCI employees. You who said I was naive, I found it funny since you don't know who I am, where I've worked and where I currently work. There are plenty if companies that do care for their customers. Maybe you've never treated anyone with respect so you are forgettable to those people. I also really like another comment about the students not being able to "hack it" in a real school. Ummm guess what CCI is a real school. Your comment shows how you feel about the students. Whoever said "ain't nobody got time for dat" obviously you did. You read it and commented. As for the last person who commented, what I said is that our students were not prepared to enroll in online school. Yes they should have read the fine print but unfortunately they didn't. In a lot of cases they couldn't read it. From your comment I can assume you were or are currently an admissions rep. They were trained to not care about the student was the enrollment doc was signed. Very few really did care and they tried to make a difference. I hope all of you with you "me" comments and attitudes enjoy your forced time off. Oh, and good luck finding work with a respectable company since it sounds like CCI did a good job making you ignorant about respect, trust, and ownership.

"Here's what, quit complaining, start looking for another job. You have that choice, most of the students do not."

First off this was way too long....you waisted not only your time writing this but others time who read it. Second off, the student did have a choice...that is the problem with this country. Everyone is trying to blame the other person. We were simply doing our jobs...that is all we could do. We did not make them not go to class, not dress properly for an interview when they graduated, we did what we were supposed to do and they did not keep their end of the bargin. I, for one, do not feel sorry for those that signed up. If they read the fine print, that we cannot guarantee them a job, that they have to pay loans back and so forth maybe they would not be in the situation they are in...that, being life. Stop crying for them, they are not victims and neither are we.

Clearly they couldn't hack it at a real school, so they get exactly what they deserve. Sorry, no tears being shed over here.

THANK YOU! Students are the ones being left out of this conversation, and it's disgusting. I'm not one of those unfortunate students who made a decision to apply for Everest's RN program, with no research to back it up. Believe it or not, doing things the "right way" (the non-for-profits way)doesn't always pan out for 100% of the student population, but I digress. Point is, CCi as a WHOLE made some lousy decisions beginning with upper management. However, there are some honest to God quality educators, administrators and STUDENTS alike, especially in the RN program. Many of my peers enrolled in the nursing program are already in the field as MA's, CNA's, LVN's and ER techs. We chose Everest because their program is recognized and approved by the CA Board of Registered Nurses. Passing the NCLEX is what makes you a nurse. Is the school you go to important? Absolutely! As I stated before, however, most of us are in the field and are ready to be absorbed as RN's by our current employee. I work for a small community hospital as a CNA one day a week and couldn't WAIT to advance to the RN level. Now, my future remains to be seen....it's awesome.
