Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

CCI student plagiarizing? Can't make this stuff up.

Student emails me: "hey, i just did wks 1-9 discution. grade them."

I went back to review her posts. All were copies of other student postings. The idiot didn't think I would take the time to compare the post against the other students, especially since I am going back to grade only hers from months and weeks ago. I gave zeroes for each one. Tell the student that they plagiarized. Student emails back: "whatt u mean plagarise? i wrote them on myown. no other teach has aqused me that way. i always get a's and b's. go back and grade agan". Sorry buddy, you can't fool me. Maybe you can fool other instructors that don't take the time to read and compare what is written with other student posts or the Internet, but I do and guess what, "YOU WILL NOT BE PASSING MY CLASS!"

It's the companies fault for catering to these types of people and promising them pie in the sky dreams that will more often than not, not come true. Admissions is given leads of people mainly looking for work, because they clicked on a link on the internet - they have to fill out that information to move forward on the screen and bingo they get routed to us and were supposed to convince them to go to school, most of these people are desperate - it's so f***ing deceptive, but this is what corporate does for marketing. The problem starts at the top, we are the minions doing what we're told. In the end if we don't enroll, we are threatened in no uncertain terms. I learned long ago to leave my morales at home, because this is an immoral company. Some people still be leave they're doing the right thing, or try to convince themselves of that, but really who the hell are we fooling. We seek out these types of students, and cry foul when we can't make pigs fly. Get real, it's this company, it's a broken model that is unsustainable and they are reaping what they have sown. And yes I feel bad for the students, that's why I'm hoping this place is shut down.

I think a big part of the problem is the curriculum. For about half of the incoming students, spending 20-30 hours on Reader Rabbit would be much more useful than writing 3 sentences about their dream career or learning style.

17244 you get my point.EVERYONE gets punished when doing what is right to maintain (hahaha) academic integrity goes against what is financially best for CCIs quarterly earnings report. We are all in the same boat but some of y'all refuse to see that.

If policy is to accept weeks 1-9 12 weeks in then kudos. If the policy is to simply give 0's for academic dishonesty then kudos again. The point is that education does not have to keep everyone just because admissions enrolled them. Everyone has parameters to operate within.

17244 -- Corruption is prevalent throughout just to put food on the table. It's good to see those that try to do right regardless of the sh#t they may get from upper management. Like the original instructor in this thread. He or she caught the wrongdoing of the student and will stand their ground that the student will not earn passing grades no matter what. They actually take their job seriously, and have integrity and morals. Sadly instead of being rewarded for doing what is correct, they would be penalized somehow by upper management.

17232, I am just tired of the holier-than-thou self-righteous garbage. Let's be honest here, just like instructors are afraid to take a drop, admissions knows that if they don't enroll, they don't eat. We all have pressure from RVPs to get the job done whether we be admissions, education, or career services. I am sure you have all heard that it's not your blood, sweat and tears that matter- there aren't any metrics for those. What counts are the results. That means that admissions will enroll those with a pulse who meet the few requirements. That also means that education will hang on for dear life until they can't anymore. Unfortunately that leaves career services to turn water into wine...

Try teaching a course to those that cannot read, write, or follow instructions (even in video form) - and are unwilling to do so. You spend more time trying to teach basic skills they should be coming in with than the course content itself! Meanwhile the few good students are suffering from not getting the education they need.

Anonymous17221 - I'm sure that was an honest typo as you can tell this person has the brains to write everything else right (unlike the idiots they let in to the school).

17194...you should teach for CCI. If you can tell in 3 days what I can't tell in 2-3 hours then everyone wins. The sooner you identify that you are unable to do anything with them the better. Admissions takes a reverse, education is spared a drop and the "headache" of actually teaching them, and their charges are reversed. So what they have been let down once again. It was bound to happen anyway, right?

If they can't do them "right"...should I disqualify you for admission?

17194 admissions is not involved in the administration of testing. That is illegal. That falls under education. A pulse, a diploma and the ability to cover tuition is all it takes to qualify. Oh and a parent's signature if only 17.

Lol. And half the time I speak Ebonics. That doesn't make me incapable of learning. I also had a 4.0 my senior year of hs (3.7 overall) and that didn't mean I was any more prepared for college than the next. I bombed twice before getting it right. You can't pre-judge anyone and their abilities or will. Regardless of the past, success comes to those who desire it enough to choose it over failure.

@Anonymous17181: Are you an Everest graduate? Admissions should be doing their jobs -- that is to make sure that students don't just have a pulse, but are actually qualified and ready for college. Give them an informal basic reading and writing assessment. All you have to do is LISTEN to how they talk to you on the phone and LOOK at how they complete their applications. If they can't do them write, then you know they are not ready. I can tell in two seconds if someone can't read or write. Why can't you?? Help them attain the basic skills. Don't just ADMIT them anyway so you can get another sucker and stick them in academic classes!

There are usually 1 or 2 students in each class that actually want to learn, and you can tell put the time and effort into doing well. They really belong in a real school. It's too bad that they will earn degrees that will be tarnished by all the rest of the 'open enrollment' dumbos.

So admissions gets a bad wrap for enrolling them even though in the time spent we would have no way to know what they are capable of. No one is blaming instructors for not following academic honesty policy. Funny everyone gets a pass because their hands are tied expect admissions.

LOL..."discution. aqused. grade them." I bet the actual discussion posts they copied were perfect grammar and spelling. Big red flag! Student should have at least spell checked their email. Shows no respect to the instructor. I would have told her to go somewhere.

I think the senior mgt came up with the generous Late Policy not only to give the instructors more work to do, but they realize that since you will be in a hurry to grade their work, you will miss stuff like this. To senior mgt, that's a plus...better student pass rates. Glad that you didn't let this atrocity slide.

An A and B student appealing for failing a class? You bet that will happen. I'm sure admin will try to coerce me into reconsidering her grade or giving her another chance. I will tell them that her failing grade stands or you will bet I will report your manipulative butts to the DoE.

What a demanding student! She should not be telling you to grade and regrade. Where the hell was this student in Weeks 1-9? WTH...did she just wake up and realize that she was in a class all this time (nearly 3 months now)??

Judging by the way the student email was written, there would be no way they would earn As and Bs at a real school! My kindergartener writes better than her!

Good catch! I also take the time to do this. Too bad you had to take so much time going back to Weeks 1-9 to grade work instead of focusing on those students that actually care to learn in the current week (Week 12 now). Seriously, the problem is also other instructors that don't want to rock the boat with student or cci upper management so they give any crap work turned in full points without questioning it. That is so wrong, but admin turns a blind eye.
