Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

Hobby Meetings...

Are they really just about the survey results?

They are part-time until they learn your job, then they fire you, hire them at a lower rate. Typical corporate strategy. If HR says not to worry, its time to worry. HR is usually part of a secret plan when they start saying things like that. Telling you what you want to hear (dont jump ship before the replacement is trained). HR works for the EMPLOYER not the employee, never forget that.

Part time work? Really? What positions?

That is a very good point. Most of the HR conversations that I have heard regarding the new hires indicate that they are part time (30 hours a week) and they make less hour than I do. Hopefully that doesn't mean they are about to replace me.

Find out how much the new hires have been hired in at. One thing they've been known to do is layoff higher paid people and hire newbies in at way less. Good way to trim the fat.

I notice quite a bit of hiring and new hires in Pittsburgh too.. What the heck are they really going to scare all these new hires when the huge layoffs come?

My understanding is that the training will be done in an online format like the HR type trainings that we have to do every year. I am at the center in Arizona and I have noticed a lot of new hires within the past month or so. That's really strange because my direct management keeps pushing us to do additional job duties with the explanation that the budget does not allow for new hires to pick up the slack.

Agree with poster below....Jim Hobby is a nobody to this company.....learning from his very weak management staff. They need a vet that isn't related in any way, shape, or form to the old OHE regime to make the center successful

Who gets to sit in Hobby meetings? Seems like only management. So what do you know, our management insider??

Do you mean not in a group?

I've been hearing that they're making room for all advising to come your way. That you guys are getting a lot of new hires. It's so funny the way they just assume that no one is paying attention.....Or that we're dumb.....Or that we don't talk.

It's pretty mind blowing.

I don't think he gave any specifics about the training, just said it was coming in the future. I'm really curious about the training content because I can only imagine it involves changes that people should probably be informed of in a different setting, but that's just speculation on my part.

Thank you so much for your answer. So do you think that if there are any "changes" we'll be notified in this "training"?

Did he give a timeline for this?

Basically. In our meeting he had two slide shows but only went over the one with the survey results. Apparently the other slide show details the company's future plan or something, but we are all supposed to get a training to go over it. The meeting also had a lot of question and answer time, so that might be a great time to bring up anything you think he might actually answer. He did seem genuinely open to answering questions, but of course, the tough questions don't have definitive answers.
