Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

To Teach or Outreach? (i.e. If you aren't dialing, you're fired!)

From the Miami Herald...."Robyn Smith, an attorney who works with that consumer group, called on Florida and other states to join in banning new enrollments. With Corinthian in turmoil, Smith cited media reports in which one student complained of having FOUR DIFFERENT INSTRUCTORS IN ONE WEEK."

“It makes you wonder what kind of education the new students are getting,” Smith said.

Adjunct here. I have heard students are asked to sign a waiver so they won't ask or receive tutoring. I guess it saves money. So instructors are expected to do it. Really? Tutoring 30 students a week, Outreach and tutoring? All for less than $150 per week before taxes? Ha. I'm so glad I found a new job. No outreach. Tutoring pays extra and only if I want it (not mandated) AND more money. This was the worst job I've ever had. And I waitressed for 10 years.

I can tell you what kind of education these students are getting: Sub prime. The occasional caring, qualified and ethical instructor is horrified that students cannot read and plagiarize instead. Those instructors do their best to help, but do not pad grades. Other instructors who are either lazy or have gotten caught up in the quest to remain employed, just pass everyone without actually teaching much of anything. Tutoring? Ineffective at CCi schools.

I've never heard that. However, instructors are at will and with morale so low, it wouldn't surprise me if they are quitting. The money is only so so anyway. And if they aren't providing security, I would quit myself.
